I'm sure all their large investors are pushing for it. Given the, uh, irrational exuberance we're seeing, they may well get more for their stake in a very liquid market, and it probably easier to buy or sell in public rather than on the sec

For this reason I have all my personal finance data on an encrypted disk image, backed up offsite to a service that lets me provide my own encryptionkey for the backups. It's more manual than one click to evernote, but I am concerned about

Many people doing serious audio work use Firewire interfaces. PCIe cards are certainly still used, moreso with higher-end setups. I've seen setups that can get around 4ms of round-trip latency, which is quite impressive.

I'm a big fan of FreeBSD/OpenBSD as server OS's. I've put OpenBSD/pf to great use as firewall machines, as they're VERY easy to configure, and the docs are most everything you need. FreeBSD has been great for general-purpose workloads. For

Totally agree that complexity is evil. Who hasn't seen code bloated beyond all recognition to the point where it has to be rewritte? Or fantastically complex engines where it was impossible to debug all the edge cases? The list goes on and

At both the office and home distractions abound. Different distractions, and there's generally less at home, but they're the types of distractions I either can or need to engage with. At a coffeeshop there are distractions, but they general

Sure, but in practice for a single-user dropbox account it's not a big deal, IF you unmount the volume when you're done with it. I do the same thing that the GP does - mount the disk image, work with the files, then unmount. It's been work

Also, the name of the author isn't anywhere on the printer-friendly version of the page. I had to go to the full version to find it. I wonder if that's intentional? I can't see how it would be, but it seems like a huge oversight.

Come on. The world doesn't revolve around programmers, despite what we read in the NYT and LA Times. It doesn't revolve around anyone. The fact that the fellow doesn't program doesn't mean that he's a newborn infant in the woods. It takes

Don't overlook Audacity. I'm surprised no one has mentioned it: http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ Free/open source, for Windows, OS X, and Linux. Overall I'm not a fan, but I come from a background in more complex/full-featured DAW's like

Norway is a counterpoint. Western, plenty of oil money, yet has very low corruption and a very high standard of living for most of the population. The country has used their oil revenue wisely.

Electroputas "3" is the record I was thinking of. There's basically no high end on it. It was so noticeable that I actually emailed the label about it, thinking I got a bad press or something, but to their credit they admitted that the bas

For live sound this is mostly true, but for recorded music there can be artistic reasons to pan low frequencies to one side or another. (Just like there could be artistic reasons to do just about anything.) It seems to be more common in el

This is why, on most vinyl albums, the low end/bass sounds are panned dead center. Lots of low end panned hard left or hard right can result in the needle jumping out of the groove, and can result in unnecessary compromises in mastering....

Why would it need to make any money? Look at roads: they cost huge amounts to build and maintain, yet the vast majority don't bring in any direct revenue whatsoever. Let's turn this statement on its head, and reframe it as a question: wh

For me the best by far was Paul Buchheit, because he was not only honest in a general sense (all the others seemed so as well), but also intellectually honest. There's no one way to do things, what works for one won't work for another. His

One useful way of thinking about nonprofits: a nonprofit fills a need that the free market on its own cannot meet. For example, the free market will not provide free meals to homeless people with HIV in Manhattan. Nonprofits should not be m
