That was one of my major questions with this article. The author leans pretty heavily on the 2.7% loss in global GDP by 2100 that is predicted to occur because of climate change. While GDP is surely important, I think it's a pretty sho

The real tragedy here is how invested millions of people are in national-level politics, yet ignore city and county-level politics which actually has the biggest impact on their daily lives. And that's where the average person realisti

Thus far in my life I have always voted Democrat, and have not been a big fan of Trump at all. But the word "unhinged" is a perfect descriptor. The cycle of outrage and self-righteousness is counterproductive. Even worse is that w

Hey! I actually have all of the things on your list. But with one catch: I work for a community nonprofit in a small town of 15,000 people in the deep south, and make probably a very small fraction of what you do. I guess life is all about

You are missing something really important though. Those kind of claims usually start with the phrase, "If X continues at the current rate..." Just in the last few years we (in the U.S. at least) reached the lowest rates of smokin

I guess HN and similar platforms could fit into the social media box, broadly. Taken extremely literally, they are mediated social environments. But I would absolutely make a distinction between sites like HN and "real deal" socia

Exactly, google glass was ugly and boring. That's why Google spinoff Niantic pivoted to gamify AR with Pokemon GO in order to take a different strategy. The idea was to get people comfortable with it using the cultural capital of Pokem

I expect the vast majority of people on HN to be familiar with Lanier and already have an opinion on him, but for those few who are not I will highly recommend his writing. I love this book in particular. It presents itself as more serious
