[shameless plug] http://git-cola.github.com/ can do by-line and by-hunk editing of both the index and work tree. It's had this feature since early 2008 ;-) I find it easier to do it with a GUI vs. with `git add -p`.

I've thought long and hard about undo for git operations. I always decided against it (in git-cola). all it takes is someone doing some git commands in a terminal to (dangerously) confuse the undo stack. That's not the target audience of

Was it motion capture (driving a 3D model from sensors) or was it video capture (making sprites from videos). I believe it was the latter. MK's photographic realism really made it stand out in the arcade.

And...weren't some of the most popular SNES games ports of popular arcade titles? Yes! Street Fighter II (and sequels). The Mortal Kombat series. These were HUGE when they arrived on the SNES. I still remember how amazing it was when

Thanks for sharing your story. I particularly enjoyed this nugget: I took the plunge and decided to spend 6 months knuckled down, learning how to code. It was initially like going back to high school and starting at the very beginning. I’

Pixar is beyond "industry-dominating". They basically invented the (CG film) industry. When Steve first acquired Pixar he was losing $1 million/year. It takes a true visionary to realize the potential in an idea and work through what to

This is completely true. When Pixar bought Disney for -7 billion it completely changed the atmosphere at the Disney Animation studio. The first thing Ed and John did was fire all of the executives who were making story decisions and let t

Righty-o, it's purely for fun. @vog: merge my pull request, man. There's a post-commit hook in there. I think we finally solved the SHA-1 vs r#### argument ;-) https://github.com/davvid/beautify_git_hash/commits/master

There is another downside to keep in mind. git commands accept the shortest unambiguous SHA-1 prefix instead of requiring you to specify the entire thing. Usually the first 7 characters or so will do, even on fairly large projects. Using

Interesting. This script modifies the commit timestamp until the commit object hashes to a SHA-1 that starts with a prefix specified on the command-line. It seems like it was used on the repo itself with prefixes of 0001, 0002, 0003.

Heya, yes, bugs are completely unacceptable. Trust me, the git project completely understands this. Sorry if my comments seemed rude or snarky. Actually, I tend to dislike "tl;dr" comments altogether. I don't think my comment added much

I appreciate the replies but down-voting is silly. Look, I have to deal directly with co-workers that misuse git. When I see them doing something bad, I tell them about it. The biggest resistance has been from those that refuse to change.

To be completely honest it's because git is made by and for hackers. It gives you a lot of rope. If you choose to "git reset --hard" after doing some very important work and not committing, hey, guess what, git won't stop you. Neither wi

I believe you're describing "git rebase". e.g. git fetch git rebase origin/master instead of: git pull which you can also do with: git pull --rebase But really, the preferred way is to use topic branches. So

Gitolite is also well supported. Gitosis is basically an abandoned project. kernel.org's new git infrastructure will be using gitolite which means you can pretty much count on it being supported well into the future.

Arcade games are a good analogy for MVC. The controller is the joystick, buttons, etc. The view is the CRT screen. The model represents the game state.

Junio (git's maintainer) was using a hook to pre-generate html documentation and manpages. These would get committed to "html" and "man" branches so that others could check them out without needing to have the asciidoc tools installed. ht

Much of the early git scripts (e.g. git-pull) have been rewritten in C. Performance is one reason. Helping out win32 (where fork+exec is slow) is another. $ ls -1 git-*.sh | wc -l 25 $ ls -1 git-*.perl | wc -l 9

${0##*/} ... are you looking for the basename(1) command? Posix requires support for this usage, but it does not work with many traditional shells, e.g., Solaris 10 /bin/sh. Here's how to work around it: #!/bin/sh exec ssh "$(bas

(I think) the parent poster was making a subtle reference to access for handicapped persons when he made the ramps vs. stairs comment. I believe his point was that there are times when keeping a seldom-used feature is the right thing to do
