True, but there are many more people that speak no English, or so badly that an article would be hard to understand. I face this problem now with the classes I teach. It's an electronics lab for physics majors. They have to write repo

Additionally, the total amount of solar and wind is limited. Surely more than we need now, don't get me wrong, but how much more? Factor 2? 10? I could see a future that is extremely energy hungry, and not just because of AI.

The sun is very close to a black body radiator, so all wavelength. The atmosphere and water filters a lot. It is actually quite strange that plants are green -- that's the wavelength the atmosphere lets through particularly well, so wo

Not having the data readily available slows it down. Having more random and less well targeted actions hit the supporters, so weakens the support. Is that enough? No. But I still lock my door, even if this will only slow down a determined t

True, but there is a large fraction of people who are not like this, but haven't given the dangers of data collection enough thought. You can reach those. Are that enough people? Let's hope so. I really fear for our older generati

The point with the firecracker/bomb is this: Not just because it's the same type of tool means that it has the same cost/benefit analysis. The dangers of, say, firecrackers in the had of the general public, scale dramatically

To be fair, I never heard about the Canadian-US war before I moved to the States. But we went over the Nazi regime multiple times in school [I am German].

Isn't an atomic bomb just a scaled up version of a firecracker? Nobody denies that collection of datasets can have upsides. But the downsides are often not seen/evaluated accurately. And negative effects don't necessarily sca

At the same time, we do not allow people to have nuclear bombs. As everything in life, it's a trade-off, but a good trade-off can only be found if people are fully aware of the consequences. It seems to me, people regularly underestima

What can I say, it's hard to give up data. So I guess the situation must escalate until the bad outcome was undeniable. And I don't want to make a point here about current political affairs. My point is that data collection has se

You totally can, but the target quantity is average current, not average voltage. Since the LED is a diode, that's not the same.

The unit of a gain/attenuation is [1]. There is no implicit unit in that case.

Exactly, and that's why a voltage gain of factor 10 is 20dB, because it's a power gain of factor 100.

Yes, and I think it just depends where how you read the square. For cm^2, we mean that we square a centimeter, not that we have a centi of a meter^2. But a hectare is really a hect of ares, so 100 ares. Here the square "is baked in&quo

I believe the point is that in "centimeters squared" you also square the cm. So it's 1/100 of a meter, then squared. While the mega in megapixels applies to the area. So presumably there are two length multiplied to be a

it's (cm)^2, not c(m^2). If there would be the one-dimensional equivalent to pixels, say pix, then 1pixel = 1pix^2, and then 1 megapixel = (kpix)^2

Well, dB is fully specified in that regard. It's always power. You can calculate the voltage gain from it under certain assumptions, and under normal assumptions you get that factor 2. But a -20dB attenuator will always reduce the powe

That is of course not true. dB without reference is perfectly fine to use for gain and attenuation. dBm or any of the variants would be flat out wrong.

▲
by

But dB without reference makes sense in many many occasions. Either because the reference is implicit (not ideal, but we have many implicit assumptions in communication), or because it's genuinely a ratio. Attenuation, gain. If you eve

That doesn't make sense. -50dB to -44dB and -6dB to 0dB is the same change in power, as a factor. If human hearing is logarithmic, the same factor produces the same increase in loudness.

▲
by

If 0 dB is its maximum, then -50dB is 50 dB down in power from its maximum (so 10^-5). No m V or other post-fix needed.

In every communication, the sender assumes that the other party has some knowledge. For example, I assume that you can read my badly worded English text. There is rarely confusion with the people in the fields that use dB a lot. That othe
