Disagree. This is so much worse than that. At least with Hungarian notation (which thankfully died a well-deserved death), its advocates were arguing for a relatively well thought-out system of readability and tying member names to their ty

Yes, I understand those are frameworks not languages. The point was that since TIOBE indexes against the word 'javascript' and not 'node,' etc. I think it's possible that JavaScript's relative usage is obscured. This is purely anecdotal on

Exactly. And note the date: 6 years ago. I think the collective wisdom has been acquired. The IT community needs to name it in a way that makes these lessons learned common enough that the next time someone is burned by Bad Agile, they won'

Must be Wednesday. TODO next week: Go collect all of the blog post cycles of "Agile Sucks" -> "No, agile in theory is fine, it's just marketing and implementation that sucks." It's a full-fledged meme at this point. And I think if you d

You're asking for integration tests, and yes those are hard to do, esp when the integration is against a large deployment of third-party or existing API code like you describe. What you want to do in that case is isolate the "glue code" if

I do this as well, but mainly because the default behavior of 'git push' makes me jittery. I might be more comfortable if this change is made. +1

Great job, Annie! And what a great way to introduce a lot of new people to Ruby, and _why's unique contributions to Ruby and the open source community in general. I thought your article was very well researched and treated _why with respect

Well said, thanks raganwald! Being a writer myself, I'm sensitive (probably overly) to the amount of work that goes into a piece like that. The fact that Annie made herself learn Ruby and get deep enough into the specifics of Matz, _why, dh

Sure, not a book review for NYT, but it is the top comment on HN, which has the unfortunate consequence of being the first impression a lot of people had of an article that had a lot of hard, thoughtful work put into it. It also caused some

That's cute. Obviously you've never recorded a rock band while riding the pre to compensate for 16bit's terrible noise floor and horribly limited headroom. You've never had the joy of ruining a perfectly good take because of that wonderful

Audio, perhaps like the wine industry, is a vast bastion of confirmation bias and subjectivity, no argument there. But I know what my ears hear, and IMO there is absolutely a vast different between 44.1 and 192. I'm not sure how you can eve

Heh, it's funny to see this late-nineties debate get re-hashed here. Also kind of fun. If it were true that there's no audible difference between 16 and 24 bit, companies like Alesis, Otari, ProTools, etc. wouldn't have spent the last 15 ye

It's an easy mistake to make, but arguably no easier than, for instance, not escaping input strings to guard against SQL injection. IMO it falls to the developer to set protected on vulnerable attributes. This is pretty basic Rails security

OP has a point. Not a f*cing important point, but a point. UIs can and should be faster, Adobe and MS are slow to catch on with current user expectations, and splash screens are annoying relics of a bygone era of bloated desktop UIs. Agreed
