I love these sorts of computing history anecdotes. Stories about the work people do or have done in the past, the companies... the daily slice of life stuff. It’s an oral history of a culture that sincerely hope we don’t lose.

I think a bigger risk is a partnership with something Amazon Sidewalk, where it won't be the increasingly rare unencrypted suburban WiFi AP you need to worry about but rather your neighbours digital assistant, speaker, lightbulbs, etc.

To add some context to the side-note, for those unfamiliar with the story, the BBC used that word in an editorial/journalistic context, quoting the racial abuse a man suffered after being intentionally hit with a car while waiting on t

I just switched Linux distro last night (Ubuntu to Fedora) and downloaded the latest Thunderbird (v78). I thought the oversized, cartoonish UI was something inherited from the Gtk or Gnome version shipping with the new distro (which oddly d

I found the same. It would be useful if you could enable dark mode on all UI elements but the message pane.

Indeed, we have major issues with snap (doesn't work with $HOME on nfs, and auto updates with very few controls are a terrible idea on servers) so avoid anything dependent on it. Otherwise, I really like the concept.

I do wonder just how much TDF benefit from other open source software. If the developers of the software they depend upon for their build toolchain, libraries within their product, text editors, web stack, development machine OS, web browse

And that downtime can even be avoided without resorting to k8s. A simple blue-green deployment (supported by DNS or load balancer) is often all that's needed. K8s only makes sense at near Google-scale, where you have a team dedicated t

Interesting to see from the docs that it seems to have been built by VMWare Pivotal, rather than an internal NHS(X) team.

And in your ~/.ssh/config that's the ProxyJump directive. Adding a proper configuration for the bastion/jump host and for the target host means you can just to "ssh target". In my case, I usually do "ssh t

I actually tried installing xubuntu-desktop first (and then plain old xfce) as I fancied switching back to them after a few years using Gnome. But you're definitely right that out-of-the-box, XFCE HiDPI support was lacking. Widgets (pa

So far, I'm very impressed with 20.04 on my personal laptop (a Thinkpad L390). HiDPI works better out-of-the-box (I didn't actually need to enable scaling manually, but did have to add a Chrome and Teams .desktop file with --force

This is fair criticism. I've worked with Python for many years now, and one of the things that attracted me was that there was always a fsirly static "Pythonic" way to do things. The language has now grown so much that 80% of
