The video-game-playing mobs occur, pretty much by definition, organically. If this stuff catches on, it will be imposed from above on coders who are far from enthusiastic.

My first thought too. But looks like this may be somewhat more oriented towards including temporal information in queries, which implies a slightly different indexing model to Datomic (where time is the last component of all the indexes the

> For instance, you don't go to the store, take a can of WD-40 home, use it, then go back to the store to pay for the can. That's true, but may have more to do with an unwillingness to track a squillion IOUs for individual cans

Of course the outdoors and mountains are very attractive but they're not a viable workplace. While many of your city complaints are valid, it's not as if the suburbs solves all of them. Given all the technology that supports rem

The UK has 26.7M households in 243,610km^2. That's nearly a hectare per household -- doesn't sound "suburban" to me (although maybe some parts of the US would disagree!). Of course, the UK population is very unevenly

Not so very long ago, there seemed to be a movement in quite the opposite direction: live somewhere car-friendly and work on out-of-town campuses with ample parking. While I'm another one who believes that the ideal commute is "st

SpaceX seem to try pretty hard to avoid pyros -- one reason I've heard is that pyro devices can't be tested! i believe they do still use a few, but pretty sure not for stage separation.

Could you say a bit more about the query optimisation problems you've run into? The "put your most restrictive clauses first" rule (which is reiterated on the new Best Practices page) usually seems to do the trick in our hand

Datomic doesn't seem to have had a huge amount of marketing: it's been spreading largely by word of mouth, so a slow build-up makes sense. It does bring an exceptionally elegant design (well worth reading Nikita Prokopov's &q

Is there a good source of information about ARX (the originally-planned OS for the Acorn ARM machines) out there? I did search around a bit a few years back and found very, very little.

There seems to be an assumption here that if you negotiate a higher salary, you'll go out and spend it all. Save your extra N% and you'll be that much better placed to ride out a layoff, regardless of why it happens.

Are you confusing wing span with body length? In the right hand panel of the video, the insect certainly moves several body lengths, and is still moving downwards at the end of the clip.

I assume you mean 40,000 kilometres here. That'll definitely be lower than that (at that kind of height, you wouldn't need hundreds of satellites for global coverage). Wiki page talks about 800km and 950km orbits.

Why not? If you've got reasonably static 100TB datasets you want to be able to fire queries at, then -- if the price is right -- a single huge-memory box could be a great solution. Need to run more queries than the box can handle? Bu

This is great. One thought: any chance of showing launches as arrows -- ideally approximating the actual launch azimuth -- rather than circles? Would help dispel the myth that rockets go primarily upwards!

If you'd enjoy the structure of university life, that's certainly worth considering. But if you're happy doing it independently, why pay $lots (and add at least some extra bureaucracy) to "make it official"?
