If you're interested in cavepersons, there's a very good podcast called "Our Prehistory". It really expanded my mind. My image of people up to 10,000 years ago was basically like a Gary Larson cartoon – Oog hit thing wit

Strong recommend for Branko Milanovic's substack. He is a very unusual combination of (1) a serious economist who does highly respected work on global inequality and (2) a real, old-school, Proust-reading European intellectual. (He

I think it is obvious that you cannot say what counts as manslaughter if you don't in fact know what counts as manslaughter. "Something I read about in an article, where people died and it seemed very wrong" is not the defini

I want to debate whether Philips actually committed corporate manslaughter. That's law, not semantics. The OP said the executives should be in jail for manslaughter. Do you think the criterion for going to jail for manslaughter should

I'm gonna be simple about this. It's stupid that they did this. It's stupid that there are articles about it. The tweets about it will be stupid, discussion here will be stupid, this comment, frankly, is stupid, I hate all th

I have a strong aversion to comments like this, because they come across as extremely generic. Are you really very knowledgeable about the Dutch justice system, that being where Philips is headquartered? Philips are gonna lose at least $400

From introspection, one thing that makes someone look poorer is stress lines around the mouth and eyes. Kind of sad that should be so.

And in calculating that tradeoff I would expect them to weight passenger safety very, very highly, unless they want to go out of business (and possibly be liable for corporate manslaughter and go to jail?)

If an airline is shown to take risks with its passengers' safety, that airline is dead, so here I would expect shareholder returns to do the job very effectively.

This is grep++ right? My guess is that it's aimed more at the humanities. Hence the GUI. My experience: in the world of humanities text analysis, there are just a ton of Java programs which were funded by some academic grant. Mostly th

You don't need mental gymnastics, and you don't need to believe that people can own ideas or that they should be commodified (though it's fine if you do). You just need to understand that people deserve credit for the ideas t
