While many here would hate it, Goodharts law is a powerful argument for things being obtus, vague and abstract. The less measurable something is, the less it can be easily hacked. Also, interestingly, what will stand in the way of AGI - no

Couldn't agree more. Obsession with fundamental physics as "the only way forward as a species" is absurd. Do any of our discoveries in CRISPR or check point inhibitors rely on the knowledge of the Higgs Boson or the fundame

Yes exactly. Anyone rich can be a scientist with the right PR. This us the postmodern dystopia we live in. (Alternatively, always has been like that, in some sense.)

Woohoo! First UC now Elsevier! The arc of the moral universe is long, but ever so often, it does indeed bend towards justice. RIP A.S.

This might work in the short term, but excess mortality will ultimately come out and tell the truth, unless Bolsanaro wants to claim those that died are still living (don't put it past him).

Population decline is very well documented. The global trends hide countries like Germany, South Korea, and Japan where the numbers have sunk as low as 1.3 births / female, far below replacement. The world might have more people by 210

I found this section ironic, since the whole point is the lack of features: " As dwm is configured in C, there’s also a community of people creating patches for dwm that add extra features like additional tiling methods, the ability to

Could this be due to the rise of pure mathematics in influencing philosophers? In pure math, counter examples play a very important role: show once counter example, disprove an entire claim. The violinist in the article is clearly trying to

In the US of course, we deduct our home office from our taxes, meaning that our fellow citizens, or debt, support working from home. Thos seems like a saner solution.

My understanding is that this was, long-term, very good for Coke. Check out this line: " On 11 July 1985, once the extent of the soda brand’s mistake had become evident, Coca-Cola relaunched the original recipe, rebranded as Coca-Cola

I'm working with the Satpathy lab on their project. I'm a PI at the Parker Institute. We usually do cancer, but are bringing our tools to COVID research in this time.

Um, the better the university the more money you have to bring in, not less. Stanford and the like have minimums for faculty to bring in money. They do take good care of them, though, by giving them good lab space, great grad students, m

No, you are wrong by confusing number of cases with deaths. Flattening the curve reduces the max number of cases, which reduces hospital overload, which in tun saves lives. Without any intervention we were/are looking at 1M+ deaths: h
