I used to work at Google in support. You were not talking to a random engineer - the support people are all dedicated support contractors. Most of the teams are all non-technical and the only thing they know about how the product works is

"gain modelling superpowers" makes no sense to someone who doesn't already understand what modelling is and how is can be used. It is also a comical idea to try to market a book toward students these days - getting even a hi

Toshiba NAND has an extraordinarily low failure rate out of the factory. Bad NAND in general is a QA problem which is expensive to fix (because it involves throwing away a lot of usable product) but is eminently fixable.

Not all of the Vertex 2/Agility 2 drives which were bricked were due to firmware issues. Around 25% of drives which failed were due to NAND failures and the lost firmware or corrupted firmware fixes often only fixed about 50%-75% of t

This announcement gives me a very nostalgic comfort - As a former competitive Counter-Strike player turned eSports tournament organizer and co-founder of an (in the end) unsuccessful eSports organization, this really reaffirms much of my ti

Those numbers are actually incredibly skewed and not very accurate - I can confidently say that a large amount of the returns in the Vertex 2/3 and Agility 2/3 lines were due to firmware problems which were fixed very early on. C

This was a firmware bug originating from the Sandforce firmware which the releases were based on - I think this one was completely fixed at least 8 months ago.

At every place i've worked, people in marketing/sales are significantly better looking than in engineering jobs (by that I mean a significant number of people are significantly more attractive). The easy way to explain this is that being a

Just going to chime in a bit as someone who has worked a lot in the past doing freelance design work - This is bad advice for anyone who expects a great designer who you can communicate with easily and will understand your product and custo

While I completely agree, I think it is important to point out that SLC is still used pretty widely in Enterprise-grade SSDs. Standard configuration on these drives is 100% over-provisioning, so lifespan is likely 20+ years.

"This is, however, the bread and butter of shell programming." This is really old-fashioned thinking. The people who have been in this industry for 10+ years all grew up without computers - and thus had to memorize all of the flags, obscur

As a fresh college grad from a non-top tier school in Silicon Valley, many of my friends are making ~$100K/year right out of school. I'm sure people from top tier schools going to Google and Facebook can make double that.

Oh, that is exactly what I meant - the Optical drive bays are all made very badly, and intended for HDDs. The motherboard/connection can certainly power any drive fine, but the replacement bay cannot.

The same reason why putting SSDs in external enclosures is extremely inconsistent - power. An SSD needs significantly more power at certain times, depending on the controller. Most of the time, an optical bay does not provide the necessar

You have to be extremely careful with compatibility with these Optical Bay adapters and SSDs. I work at an SSD company and these are the #1 cause of issues in the field for users. While we don't officially support them, we still make sure

My takeaway is that this is not profitable on the global or national scale, but on a local or regional scale, it can be. Amazon might not want to pursue a strategy with limited scalability, whereas Instacart might not even need to worry ab
