“We don’t train on your data” doesn’t exclude metadata, training on derived datasets via some anonymisation process, etc. There’s a range of ways to lie by omission, here, and the major players have established a reputation for being willin

Right - the scraper operators already have an implementation which can use the HTML; why would they waste programmers time writing an API client when the existing system already does what they need?

If the Chinese government had said “yeah, that happened” instead of denying there were protests at all, the obsession over it would vanish. The gaslighting is ongoing, IMO that’s what keeps it in the western consciousness.

The killer feature of JXL is that most websites already have a whole bunch of images in JPEG format, and converting those to JXL shrinks them by about 30% without introducing any new artifacts.

Trusting some random VC-backed SAAS not to sell my data is (to me) as mad as trusting that the tide won't come in - it would be astonishing if they _didn't_ sell my data. My bank has both commercial & cultural reasons not to

MS _can_ do that, but only with new APIs (or break backwards compatibility). Wine only needs to keep up once folks actually _use_ the new stuff… which generally requires that it be useful.

Readable is relative; it’s much less readable than some languages, but much more than the ones it’s largely displacing. I would much rather try and figure out a bug in unfamiliar rust than in unfamiliar cpp.

The laws I have read used the term “effective control”; if a shareholder is able to control the org (eg can replace the CEO or board), they are obliged to comply with government orders regarding that org.
