There's a new Netflix Prize coming up; this one will be time-limited. Most contestants shared a lot and made it a very interesting experience; many got contacts in industry that got them good jobs or started their own companies.

I hear they exist, I've just never met them. That could be my sampling bias. None of the people around me relying on IDEs are great hackers. Instead of arguing about what might have been implied in what I wrote, I'd rather you introduced me

Thanks, I was hoping people would add to that list - and certainly wasn't claiming that covering those 4 skills would make you a hacker.

It's not a "real" issue, so much as a proxy. I've never seen a good hacker look at their keyboard, whereas there are plenty of people that get out of flow looking for a symbol. If a person can't type, I simply assume they're a noob and don'

$20k? charity? I have projects with 20-100 LOC up on github, for my own convenience. It costs me nothing to make these public if I can't sell them - that's not charity.

What part of Canada are you in? In Montreal, many companies routinely ask if a developer has open source projects, or code samples. If a company doesn't do this they are hiring based on resume and interview only, rather than seeing actual c

100% agreed. This is moral panic, pure and simple. What's disturbing is that a University would remove a tenured professor based on sexual preference / fetish.

I doubt it was that much of a screw up. People do casual hook-ups for fantasy play all the damned time , and only in a minuscule fraction of those does one partner later claim it was not consensual.

Reading it again, I see where the confusion lies - but I didn't even want to get into the issue of ownership. The $500k is only the "expected value". You have a 50% chance of making $1M, 50% of walking away with $0. "then you're more than t

I wish it were selection bias. Unfortunately, every time I hear about a YC company they seem to brag about the hours they work. Are there numbers about this? A survey of average hours worked in YC startups (ideally separating code / biz tim

Never applied, although encouraged others to do so. If people working insanely long hours is actually mythology, that actually hurts YC: sane people will avoid applying in the first place. If the long hours is really true, then people aren'

So do you condone working such long hours that founders are routinely sleep deprived?

So, what's up with these insane hours? You've written about the need for working long hours, but aren't Michael Parkatti and Mike Marrone taking it a bit too far?
