If you try to make a Go package, for example, you end up having to provide a hash. To generate the hash `vendorSha256`, you have to run `nix-prefetch`, but that program is broken on MacOS. You can also stub the hash (e.g. with lib.fakeSh

This is not true and no hacks are needed. Since nix only depends on /nix it can be used in combination with ANY linux OS. Just so that noone runs into issues. This is not completely true. E.g. you cannot use Nix on Fedora Silverblue,

Those counts seem to be wrong. Looking at the code, they seem to count the number of merge commits (commits with >1 parent). However, some nixpkgs committers also use GitHub's rebase merge option. This means the change went through

The gotcha I have with Nix is it's too much abstraction. I have to look at the upstream documentation, then try and map it to Nix's config syntax, then hope everything works. For me, the big benefit is that even though I have to

Here, the trackpad is broken after fastboot 1/2 times (basically registers button presses all the time, making it unusable). Without fastboot no such issues, plus modern machines boot fast even without fastboot ;).

I get the point of flatpak and I see its value. Personally I just don't need yet another channel through which I need to get stuff. IMO Flatpak solves several real problems: 1.) allowing third parties distribute applications in a dis

Keep in mind that their storage boxes only use RAID and do not provide any other kind of redundancy by default. If the machine goes up in flames, your data is gone.

I agree, but nobody seems to be really working on (user-friendly) sandboxing of applications distributed through traditional package managers. You can use Firejail or bubblewrap, but they are not exactly user-friendly solutions.

There is some overlap and there are a lot of differences. One point of overlap is that Nix makes it easy to install packages that are newer than your os. For example, you could run NixOS 20.09 or Ubuntu 16.04 and have the latest Handbrake o

I meant that they just shouldn't sell the Pro with 8GB. I know that the meaning of 'Pro' is somewhat debated, but if they want to address professional developers and creatives, 8GB is just too little. Also, 8GB additional mem

There is no reason for Docker when all OS just have native containers support. Indeed. On Fedora Docker has already been replaced by rootless Podman containers, which are great for development. I wouldn't be surprised if Podman will

If you are using a MacBook for work, get it with 16GB. 200 Euro is at most a few hours of salary for a developer in a western country and it will improve heavy workflows (JetBrains IDEs, Docker, etc.) a lot. If it is a personal Mac, I would

Why would you recompile X11? Back in the 90ies, early 00s, I did compile kernels to make them lean and enable some functionality that was not in the default kernels. But I never saw anyone recompiling X11 outside Gentoo and other source-bas

I have found that over time org documents tend to become coupled somewhat to your Emacs configuration and are not generally portable. I guess this is the reason why many org example snippets on the net do not really work exactly the same.
