I am more confused than when we started, what exactly are you saying macOS is doing that nobody else is doing? > use readline bindings in a textfield I don’t even know what this means.

You…ever see a screenshot of Gnome? This statement of yours is also a bit silly considering Linux desktops have way more in common with macOS than with Windows. They share a whole bunch of concepts like POSIX compliance, use the same shells

I like XFCE for capturing the spirit of an era, and it’s still lightweight, so in that sense it’s excellent. If I was more purely looking for something lightweight I think I’d end up with some other choice with a more modern design language

No off-site backup for me, these items aren’t important enough, it’s more for “oops I broke my computer” or “set my new computer up faster” convenience. Anything I really don’t want to lose is in a paid cloud service with a local backup sy

I use Pika Backup which runs on the BorgBackup protocol for backing up my system’s home directory. I’m not really sure if this is exactly what you’re talking about, though. It just sends backups to network shares.

Asking for anything out of Time Machine is a lost cause. It’s essentially a completed and legacy product. I migrated to Linux + Pika Backup. For photos I use Ente Photos with their managed cloud storage plus a continuous export to my NAS. E

In my experience migrating to another provider from iCloud, this hasn’t been a significant issue. Live Photos in particular are not really proprietary in the sense that they’re implemented in an extremely simple way that basically every pho

The thing is, LLMs aren’t redistributing your code. You’d have a minuscule chance of an LLM actually reproducing your code verbatim without major modifications. Copyright and copyleft only deal with source code distribution. Your last sente

I both agree and disagree with you. The thing is, copyright law is not really on your side. Viewing copyrighted material without paying for it is not generally something people get fined for. A lot of training falls under fair use that over

Based on your assessment you’d have almost no issue at all. I’m almost certain you’d have no trouble running Quicken or Ableton. Ableton even has a Bottles configuration available, which is a one-click GUI install: https://usebot

I don’t really agree with the “Windows 11 is unstable” narrative, especially compared to the ways that system updates on macOS and Linux have not always been 100% stable. The functionality of the iPhone connection to Linux is not unique to

Since when does government set trends in private industry? I’d like to know what private businesses are copying the kind of workflows and customer experience you get at the USPS or DMV.

So, I guess it’s a country-dependent jump to conclusions? I have had a lot of banks and credit cards, mobile payment apps like Venmo/PayPal in the US and they almost all work on mobile web and desktops. But I recognize that wealthy wes

Let me clarify my statement: one government agency’s election to use an app for a single purpose isn’t an indicator of much. It’s not like the UK sent out a mandate to private banks or any other private industry on this issue. It’s also onl

I think there is a slight distaste in how the article conveys concern, almost like a light xenophobia on the issue. With the one year and done nature of college basketball, that must mean that the US has its fair share of elite high school

No, you’re not making an argument in the context of political economy. You’re making an argument based on nothing: no data, no studies, just anecdote and personal opinion. I don’t take seriously your attempt to hide it behind a supposed “ob

Prices don’t just magically go up that way? If I live in India the PlayStation 5 isn’t magically price reduced to $100 just because my income is lower. Similarly, it doesn’t magically become $5,000 if I live in Monaco.
