Firefox is single process (mostly – some plugins run in separate processes), but multi-threaded. There's one thread for the main UI, but as much work as possible is done asynchronously off of that thread. Browsers are very complex software

FWIW, JavaScript is getting a Set type (and a Map as well). You can try them in Firefox Nightly. JavaScript is also getting the ability to change property lookup behavior on objects using Proxy (available since Firefox 4). Browsers are movi

I built something like this in 2005[1], got distracted[2] and still wish I had the tool today. My database was organized around links rather than feeds/items. Two stories that included links to the same thing were considered to be talking a

Another option is source mapping, allowing the browser's tools to map from the JavaScript that is running over to the original source files (with line and column mapping). Some support for that has landed in WebKit, and we have patches for

Firefox has been shipping Proxy since Firefox 4 and uses it a great deal internally. Proxies are an awesome feature!

It sounds like the Trello API is coming along. Has anyone made an Alfred plugin or command line tool for adding cards? Quick keyboard-based capture of thoughts is important for keeping focused on what I'm doing.

FWIW, I recently wrote a novel in Scrivener and with very little tweaking it did a nice job converting for print and ebooks (and it allows a fair bit of tweaking). All depends on your needs, of course, but I was pleasantly surprised at the

Right. Mozilla supports quite a variety of things that make the web a better place. Firebug is one of them.

Mozilla is putting quite a bit of effort into apps right now. "App tabs" in the browser is definitely one small step in getting a nice total ecosystem in place for developers. FWIW, when I looked at Raven, my initial thought was "it's a bro

I listened to this over the weekend. It was entertaining, but can be summed up with "Sometimes you quit too early, sometimes you quit too late" from somewhere in the middle of the program. Not a lot of hard data, but some interesting anecdo

I realize that my reply didn't address the fact that camera access took a long time. You're right... I don't think it's because of a boneheaded committee, though. I'm just guessing, because I have nothing to do with this directly, but I'm g

They had data binding? I don't remember that (that's a pet feature of mine ;) From what I've seen, things don't really start in the committees. They start with people at browser vendors scratching their own itches and eventually escape out

While there are a couple of minor bits I agree with, overall I think Joe's off on this one. The web has five organizations pushing really hard on it at this point (Mozilla [my employer], Google, Apple, Microsoft and Opera). The web almost h

I have to disagree. Yes, Kindle reader came out using Web SQL DB, but that spec is dead and for good reasons. I don't know how far along IE is at supporting IndexedDB, but it won't be long before Firefox, Chrome and IE all support IndexedDB

I haven't looked at the browser support for Edge animations, but I'm guessing they're supporting earlier IEs, which limits what they can do. It would be cool if they had a switch to render for only modern browsers.

Actually, getting the code from the server (and caching it) and storing data locally is already a solved problem. Take a look at IndexedDB, which is already supported by Firefox 4. The idea here is to think of apps as being built on web tec
