I followed essentially the same path (though I ended up working in 4GLs in the late 80s). I also have fond memories of my time working (playing!) in BASIC. That said, I like the options we have today for writing software that needs to be ma

If you select a 2 or 3 character email name when signing up, it pitches the up charge to you. Not a big deal to select longer, and personally if I use it I’ll be using my own domain name.

My biggest question when seeing this headline was "why?" > It does make sense for Dropbox to enter the password manager market, considering that many existing passwords already use Dropbox as a cloud option to sync data between

I don't know if you're intending those questions about independent commissions to be figurative. People have thought about this and, in Michigan, we voted such a commission in: https://votersnotpoliticians.com/redi

Yeah, I'm sure that if we needed to serve more videos through our "fallback player", we'd investigate more cost effective ways to run it. With thousands of videos, it'd be a pain to move … but at least that would be

Unfortunately, I don't think I've seen this publicly reported and I'm not in a position to decide to make that public. I will say that the amount we pay for our infrastructure, especially right now, is reduced by generous sup

There's a lot going on in your observation, and this is all speculation on my part (even though I am a Khan Academy employee). We did have quite a bit of usage and awareness among schools already before the shutdowns started. Couple th

Khan Academy today supports serving video outside of YouTube, which is blocked in some schools. We could essentially flip a switch to not use YouTube, but the cost would be substantial because those videos go Fastly->S3, so anything not

I need to write a blog post about this :) A lot of people seem to think of Khan Academy as a bunch of videos. Many have also seen the exercises and articles. Those things are all pretty static (though it gets more complex when you conside

As an extreme, can you imagine if Facebook doubled its usage in a week? It depends on what the site does and what floor it's starting from. We (Khan Academy) are certainly not at Facebook's scale, but we do run a site with a lot o

It seems odd to me that there are no videos accompanying this press release, and there also don't appear to be any videos in the Mac app store. It seems like video (with audio!) would be a much better way to show off what this new vers

Yeah, that's weird. If I had to guess, that's some sort of computational blur (like Apple's Portrait Mode, but who knows which implementation. Maybe the photo still has EXIF data to tell what the camera was.)
