It's a sign public equity markets aren't structured well that companies aren't encouraged to think long term. The most successful companies in today's markets don't even allow common shareholders to control the comp

Flutter seems like the killer app that could revive Dart. In comparison: Javascript For mobile with React: no AOT compile. Relies on loading the entire JS VM which adds startup time and can require bundling a large library on Android. Canno

Dart is being positioned as a cross compiling, Android and iOS (but not web) development language with the Flutter platform. It very much seems like a replacement for Kotlin's usage on Android, but only if you are also switching to thi

Carbon taxes are a very market oriented approach, not a silly idea. Natural gas extraction and transmission turns out to emit more methane to the point of negating its lower CO2 emission benefits. https://e360.yale.edu/feat

Yeah SOMA is quite pricey. I live in the East Bay though and I find prices out here are comparable to the rest of America for food and drinks. Even in SF, once you get away from central areas, prices are pretty ok.

I'm in the bay area, and the main thing that is expensive is housing. Groceries are cheap. Eating and drinking out are the same as other cities. To help the middle class, remove restrictive zoning policies. It's a uniquely America

I don’t think content providers like newspapers feel exposing snippets that are so informative that readers stop engaging with the main site are being provided a valuable service. Google has long since moved away from simply providing ten b

Capital gains are only taxed for American investors. Foreign investors get away scott free. Their proceeds are highly unpredictable and even more cyclical compared to corporate income tax. There are too many ways to defer or never pay them.

It's probably not possible to win over NIMBYs. Incoming population will always create more traffic. Taller buildings always overshadow something. They have almost no interest in letting in more people. The key is recognizing that it is

More and more young people come to CA to start their careers, but then take the experience (and ability to command high salaries) and move to a cheaper state. We're eroding our talent pool with the crazy high cost of living. The area w

JS is enough for most application code. There are libraries that have and always will be in C, C++, or something similar, and it would make the most sense to wrap and expose them for different environments. JS makes no sense for shared libr

Would grad schools recruit more Americans if a) their international intake was capped b) they were forced to offer more livable stipends c) the odds to get tenure track increased? Grad school is a pretty bad deal for US citizens, and so muc

I'm not generally anti regulation, but for housing it's ridiculous. New housing should be granted by-right permission. NIMBY's have a major empathy gap and should not have a veto.

Bus rapid transit is a great compromise. They have special right of ways with dedicated signaling and lanes. But no need to lay rail so costs are much lower.

Not always blow themselves up. Just continually reinvest. In their people, their products. The problem with our economic system is how short sighted corporations have become.

React is nice because it encourages encapsulation and componentization. Redux feels like it discards all that. Your OO encapsulation gets disassembled into pure functions and dumb state. Pure functions are great to reason about, but redux a

Webassembly is incredibly hard to debug in the browser. Source maps give you a decent stack trace, but you can't evaluate variables. I'm hoping this situation improves.

You mean Ajit Pai's FCC or Tom Wheeler's FCC? Because under Pai, they seem to be rolling back all the regulations meant to control the industry and seem to be very much under their influence.
