That's good info and news to me. "relatime" is unfortunately a silent killer as well, albeit nowhere near as intense as "strictatime".

Also: a lot of OS distributions aimed at SBCs with microSD storage forgetting to set noatime/relatime on their file systems, to avoid thousands upon thousands of writes for access time updates whenever files are read . It's onl

The ones I have all "come online" faster than a mechanical HDD spins up and incur no slowdown. Things run at full Ultra ATA speeds. You may have run into one with quirky firmware or so - there are quite a few different chipsets.

I don't buy it, because it contradicts the very nature of flash storage. Unless you used your IDE HDDs as piñatas, that is. But the problems specific to SD/microSD and USB flash drives are more than limited longevity. The underlyi

Don't use SD/microSD storage for these things. It's terrible for a number of reasons. Get yourself a cheap IDE-SATA adapter instead and plug an old used 2.5" SATA SSD in there.

Nice work, especially reverse-engineering the controller. I use a $5 bidirectional IDE<->SATA adapter.

I remember seeing the precursor to this some 10-12 years ago. Can't recall if it was the same company or not. The prototype looked like a block of very densely packed sheets of carbon fiber - imagine a typical car radiator but with fin

Prosody (server) and Monal (iOS client) make a great combination. I'm not aware of anything for Android that's as elegant as Monal but I'd be happy to hear people's suggestions.

Computer magazine/book art from the 70s and 80s is almost an artistic style of its own. I love browsing old issues of Byte, COMPUTE!'s Gazette etc. just to see the imaginative graphical work.

My source is my experience from having worked with MariaDB and MySQL for about 15 years now. The two articles you cited are 10 and 13 years old, so let's run a fresh test with two identical test tables that have their columns indexed i

FFS/FFS2 on OpenBSD is definitely one of the system's weaknesses. In addition to being kinda slow it's also a bit unnerving that the file system invalidates relatively easily. While it doesn't happen regularly for me, an
