I think games like Unreal Tournament 2004 and Quake III Arena are reflections of a different market. Production costs and expectations around sales/RoI are a lot different from the late 90s.

There’s traditionally a milestone during production called “vertical slice”, where the developer would present a segment of the game that’s meant to represent the final product. They’re not necessarily considered best practice, since a deve

There will be rare in-game items until Windows Update affects compatibility with the game’s Unity client and the developer is out of business.

Sometimes; I find it can depend on the project in mind. I think if a decent number of people try to scope for a certain timeline, you can get interesting discussions on what's achievable within the timeframe. Maybe a bit like schoolwor

Perhaps something similar to the Xbox’s UWP mode might be nice. The owner can run their own computer program on it, but opts out of Xbox games and services.

I think what's interesting about this approach is that the act of creating the game is the educational work, rather than consuming the product.

This was an interesting read! Video games tend to be known as entertainment products, but here we see the creation and evaluation of one as an educational goal. I feel like this pushes on the boundaries of the medium in an interesting way.

I don’t know much about League of Legends or its architecture, but I could imagine they were making tradeoffs at times for the product’s sake. I think they hint at this with `std::string` usage in their tech debt article. [1] It’s been said

I’m hoping it encourages game developers to spend a bit more engineering time on optimizing their games for a lower minspec. Or, knowing that users won’t be purchasing new computers at as fast of a clip will encourage software made for a wi

My guess is that as time goes on Taiwan will see itself more and more as Taiwanese than Chinese. Much in the same way that many French-speaking Canadians do not see themselves as necessarily French.

I think you've touched on the spirit of the game's (unexpected) popularity. A lot of younger audiences might have only played more conventional AAA games beforehand, so this might be their first taste into something that's mo

I have a beta MNT Reform 2, and the laptop falls in the "just works" category. It gives a bit of bulk and the setup wouldn't work for everyone, but I downright love the user-replaceable standard batteries.

Funny enough, I’ve never considered the CBC an “elite” source of media and didn’t get that impression from the CBC itself. Maybe you could explain a little? I want up understand what you mean better.
