I was wondering about this. Thanks for chiming in. I don't know Irish but I do know a bit of Scottish Gaelic, and it is as you say: there is no word for yes (or no), not even in the way the author suggests. Affirmation or negation is d

Indeed. There's no way I would've learned how to program at such an early age if the process had been any more complicated than "install Turbo Turtle." (And later, HyperCard, THINK Pascal, THINK C, and finally CodeWarr

I love that. Chalmers himself (or maybe Searle?) once suggested this very thing about Dennett. Made me laugh out loud when I read it. In all seriousness I wonder if Dennett hates consciousness (the “hard” kind) because it threatens his worl

I've heard both but personally prefer dēmən. Dāmən just sounds goofy to me, like someone trying to pronounce Gaelic (or Welsh!) without having learned anything about it first. I wish some doctoral student in classics would write a blog

Use them on trips when you don’t need them so you’re prepared. I flew home over New Years via VORs and pilotage just to keep it sharp.

That people—even highly trained people—click through confirmation dialogs without reading them is HCI 101. Any system that depends on humans never making a mistake is going to fail.

It’s been a while since I’ve read Slate but I recall their “Explainer” series always made a point of putting the answer in the first sentence, with the rest of the article serving as amplification. I really liked that, for the same reason y
