That's not what at least one lawyer has told me, though lawyers tend to be a pretty cautious bunch. As I said, you've got to know the right people to get access to the stuff I'm talking about. (There are also other conditions

It's contractually forbidden. If you know the right people, you can get access to complete toolchains built in secret for compiling iOS apps on Linux. It's a lot of engineering work but not technically impossible. But it's al

Whether the app store is "inextricably tied" to Apple's platforms is beside my point. The state could simply force Apple to allow other app stores, or to write into law a maximum profit margin (similar to profit caps on the h

Probably not Microsoft or Blackberry, but in a society oriented in a more worker-friendly direction there would have been better outcomes in terms of freedoms than what Apple has produced.

Yes, of course I want society to have a greater degree of democratic control over massive trusts like Apple!

I'm pretty sure if Apple hadn't created the modern smartphone someone else would have, and they'd probably have been less controlling and overall better than Apple too. The structural conditions for smartphones existed, Apple

Do developers have a reasonable choice other than to use Apple tools? You can't even compile an iOS app on a server-class operating system and instead have to overpay for low-spec Macs for CI.

The brightness at places like FB tends to be diverted towards making money, not ensuring software quality. (This is also true at places like Apple, just differently so.)

From the article: "Rather than coming off as a legitimate attempt to help legitimate problems, then, this form of gender activism appears to many like an unappealing combination of ideologizing and attention-seeking and raises the ques

One of my closest friends is an AFAB demigirl. Despite the bad ideas of a subset of trans people (morphological liberation is very important to me), the idea of "transtrenders" is bogus and oppressive.

The entire idea of "transtrenders" is a made up one designed to perpetuate oppressive gender roles and work against solidarity within the trans community. The fact that she takes it seriously is pretty goddamn founded, as far as e

It is not just "unfortunate", it betrays their actual views, which is that we should be ready to sacrifice people's lives on the altar of patriarchal gender norms. A lot of the more polite bigots will be comfortable making co

That's a shockingly ignorant article, particularly when it comes to nonbinary people — it even uses "transtrenders" to try and separate the good, gender-conforming trans people from those icky blue-haired weirdos . Thank you

Indeed, we have a disagreement there. I consider the rationalist truth-over-everything-else philosophy to be profoundly, deeply unjust and immoral.

Using standard truth-seeking tools is in fact bad and harmful when it comes to people's identities. The ultimate goal of society should not be to seek out objective truth! It should be to minimize harm to human beings. Seeking tr

Yes, the problem is not with immigration itself but with who reaps the benefits of it. The immigrants obviously massively benefit because they're in a more productive environment. But after that, capitalists and landowners gain far mor

Ahh, last I checked Apple would only do 1 more year of security updates. Glad to see they've changed their stance. 10 is better than 7 but not as good as the 15+ years Windows and Linux offer.

Correct. Apple's overall strategy with its short 7-year lifecycles is to use planned obsolescence in order to continue extracting money from its consumers. An 8 year old desktop running Windows 10 or Ubuntu 20.04 is perfectly functiona

Sure, but here it's support for hardware costing 4-5 figures being dropped after a paltry 7 years. The latest version of Windows 10 runs great on 10 year old desktops, and will probably be supported for many more years to come.

I have 10 year old PCs that are perfectly functional. My main desktop is mostly from 2012 with a couple upgrades in between and works like a champ. 7 years is far too low. This is planned obsolescence. With Apple preventing dual boot on ARM

Plenty of people that grew up lower middle class in their home countries now making 500k a year on H1s at FAANGs. H1s benefit the immigrants the most, and any analysis that centers anything other than the immigrants is deeply inhuman.

Apple is welcome to charge 2.9% the way other payment processors do. That is reasonable. 30% is a protection racket.
