I have very little confidence that human beings can actually create that sort of country — at most we can only aspire to it.

I don't see that normalization as particularly harmful, given that the law is so often merely a tool of state oppression.

It's not a position you're put into with WhatsApp or any other app. It is bad for your messaging to be made by the same company as your phone. Some really problematic conflicts of interest.

We're talking about Something Awful in this thread, not Apple. You're right that a community is not a business. That's ultimately the fundamental rot in capitalism.

Absolutely, but it's even more ridiculous to use that argument as a shield against criticism.

The communities I'm part of now go out of their way to be inclusive. People who can afford it are strongly encouraged to pay more to subsidize people who can't. People who pay more don't get any special privileges either. Tho

If your response to someone explaining how a fee gate impacted them is just a shrug, then I'm afraid our worldviews are so different that communication between us is impossiblr. edit, response to a comment below: people can come up wit

I grew up lower middle class in a poor country and could never access Something Awful because the fee was literally a week's worth of groceries.

That's rationalist baloney. There is an objective truth, and in many cases we can asymptotically approach it, but not nearly in all cases.

I've always subscribed to the notion that while there is an objective reality, in many cases humans have no hope of finding it directly and instead only have access to it through cultural filters. What this means is that cultural proce
