Specifications-wise ( http://www.microsoft.com/Surface/en-US/surface-with-windows-... ) it's actually very similar to base models of the MacBook Air (perhaps actually smaller than the Air without the keyboard cover). At about $100 cheaper.

I can almost let the decision to have Metro on enterprise desktops slide, considering I use Windows 8 everyday in the enterprise and can almost fully ignore Metro (except for the broken desktop search). But Metro on Windows Server? It just

Universal, I think, also implies single unified search. OSX has this, iOS has this, Android has this, Windows 7 has this. Heck even Windows Vista has this. Windows 8? Nope. This is the most frustrating part of using Windows 8.

To me it was pretty clear that this article was primarily reviewing the "modern UI" part of Windows 8. I think your comment reiterates the point that the "modern UI" has no place on the traditional desktop. I too use Windows 8 everyday and

You have to bring up the charm menu (mouse in upper right or windows-c), and then click search and then start typing. Took me far too long to figure that out.

The only thing that annoys me is the split up of searching for programs, settings (control panel applets), and files. I alway hit start and then begin typing, but 2/3 of the time don't see what I'm looking for. I have to notice that I'm act

The nice thing about git is that it is distributed. Meaning, you don't have to push to your public fork until just before the deadline if you concerned about your ideas being stolen.

That's what http://www.microsoft.com/bizspark/about/ is for. Free software licenses for 3 years. The catch is that you'll be then tied to the Microsoft platform. And afterwards you'll have the privileged of paying for licenses. And really

Windows RT is a version of Windows 8 built to run on ARM processors. "Metro" style apps can be compiled to run on Windows RT and downloaded from the Windows App Store. However traditional desktop software cannot be compiled for or installed

This is really useful as a template for building a CSS grid system. I love that it's not a "framework" and that the CSS itself is very simple and straight-forward to build upon: https://github.com/ThisIsDallas/Simple-Grid/blob/master/simp.

You would be shocked (I am constantly) to learn how many devices, kiosks, ATMs, and other terminals simply run Windows.

If you layout the letters in 3 horizontal rows, I expect it to be QWERTY. I suspect most people (such as yourself) agree. I have seen onscreen keyboards (such as with my DVR) that layout the letters more like a square. While you are hunting

This is also true for MS SQL. However online index operations do require the expensive licenses, unfortunately. Postgres is amazing.

That's pretty crazy. I think I consider Meddata to be such a big player because of their extensive payer list. Also, we use Meddata as a "backup" route for when our more direct (and free) connections are unavailable. I'm curious to learn mo

The big companies all charge crazy expensive transaction fees: Emdeon, ENS (now Ingenix), ACS (now Xerox), Ability, Relay Health (formally HTP), and Meddata/Transunion. They all charge upwards for 25-35 cents per eligibility transaction. Th

That's the thing, I'm pretty sure check clearinghouses are near real-time these days. At least in the US. Deposit the check and within a few minutes it'll either clear from the other bank or bounce.
