Breaker 101 launched about 3 years ago on HN. At that point, it was extremely time-intensive (for students and myself) and cost about $1000. The price only went up over time, which meant that fewer and fewer people could afford this infor

They just closed $18B in revenue in the past fiscal year. Even if they successfully began selling hardware and were making twice that, they'd be idiots to give up that huge, huge income stream. Their investors would kill them, and fo

Every candidate has supported things I disagree strongly with. That doesn't change that they may have supported many more things that I agree even more strongly with. Donating to a campaign against marriage equality is very different

That's totally reasonable, too. I had assumed that the wash from the rocket would be largely straight down, but that's probably way wrong.

I do wonder why they don't have a separate small barge with a couple fiber runs between them, to do the comms (e.g. host the dish(es)). I guess it just isn't that important.

If you could trivially patch memory at runtime, they wouldn't need this firmware in the first place -- they'd just patch out the lock-on-fail code. If you assume that the chain of trust is compromised such that memory changes can

Yes. This is something that Ben Goldacre has been railing on, as it's one of the biggest problems in medicine. https://www.ted.com/talks/ben_goldacre_what_doctors_don_t_kn... <-- Relevant talk.

Making it fixed just means you can't fix future bugs. The secure approach is to ensure that updates are only possible if the device is either unlocked or wiped completely.

If you consider caching of keys, there's no reason that the first login attempt after a cold boot couldn't take 1-2s. Each subsequent login would be roughly instant.

Many applications don't work with anything but glibc, so distributions don't use them; because distributions don't use them, applications don't support anything but glibc.

I wrote this over the weekend and have found it tremendously useful already. It's very simple (less than 250 lines, nearly 100 lines of which is the template for HTML output), but it's quick and easy to do large amounts of math.

Inline from C libraries won't -- as far as I'm aware -- inline into a Rust function. Inline is a compile-time hint, not a link-time behavior. In theory this could be changed in LLVM, but it seems really unlikely to me. The func

Hm, I bet there's a flag to disable SIMD entirely (not really important here), and maybe even enable softfp if you use any floats in your code (or libraries, by extension). That'd be interesting to hack in, if it's not alrea
