Do you think it's maybe time to move Gnus out of the Emacs core distribution and maintain it as a package in ELPA? It feels wrong to me to be maintaining so much unnecessary code in the core distribution.

I use Emacs heavily, write projects in emacs lisp, and have used gnus and offlineimap/dovecot for my email for a year or so. For nearly everyone this is a spectacularly bad idea, other than to gain some experience with Linux/Unix
