Jury-rigging one of the A380s would be cheaper and faster, in my opinion. Also there is an unfinished An-225 somewhere in Ukraine, so that is another option.

Would be interesting to see what comes of it. As you progress along the following chain: genomics-->proteomics->interactomics->metabolomics, our understanding becomes blurrier and challenges harder.

I'd take you mean a M3 MacBook Pro laptop, because M3 Mac Pro is not available yet... which year are you from, exactly? So, assuming I am scientist from 1961 that just have given clearance by CIA to examine an unusual object that looks

I flew transatlantic in 2024 on a brand new A350 and it still had an ashtray in the bathroom door. I think it is going to be a while until they remove those.

Almost any combination of reagents can work as primary cell - even a literal potato! But designing a secondary (rechargeable) cell is a different story... Every promising chemistry has been investigated for many decades and yet the successe

Even if it does 100% work as advertised, the amount of details to follow in the protocol is insane. Half of the things there are probably placebo, the other half can be condensed into the less complicated solution.

With the exception of computers, most of the engineering and materials of 1969 and 2024 are remarkably similar.

You can approximate low-precision digital operations with analog at better energy efficiency. https://mythic.ai/ is trying.

Seems every generation have a new thing to fear. Eventually it subsides into background, the heralds of doom then move on to next big thing, and the real dangers are quietly and thanklessly mitigated by more competent people. We had this pa

Good question! I use Skyfield library for my project, it does require downloading NASA ephemeris, but it is only <200MB, unless you want a very long time period and you need to do it once every few years. (DE430 got published in 2014 and

You won't be able to ship 300+ people across Atlantic any time soon on a EV glider. So, a realistic take is using biofuels instead of kerosene for aicraft engines.

Absolutely. Never understood why people are so infatuated with "cloud" options. Yes, it is convinient, but you are absolutely paying at least order of magnitude more for the same amount of compute/storage.

Pity the article didn't mention SVT, Soviet mass-produced battle rifle and close equivalent of Garand. Arguably more modern design, similar to M14 in features (adjustable gas regulator and detachable magazine).

reminds me of fusion energy promises, or at least "the bottomless money pit". The science is solid, but the engineering challenges delayed even proof-of-concept experiment literally until next century.

I was on the island of Malta, and under certain lighting condition the blue color in sea disappears and it becomes almost purple, very dark too. Not an exact impression, but a tentative hue that made me recall "wine-dark" phrase.

TL;DR: Traditional HPC architecture is already good enough for large-scale ML tasks, but using the more cost-effective, commodity cloud datacenter architecture with some tweaks in virtualization to improve performance we got the solution th

You can run ML algorithms on imagery in space, and do a bit more than just downlink sensor data. There is already one satellite that works as such an experimental platform: https://www.groundstation.space/esa-funds-12-new-ex
