You're referring to Grandi's Number. Numberphile covered this pretty well on their youtube channel: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PCu_BNNI5x4

You mentioned OLTP. Erlang's Mnesia store comes to mind, but as far as I'm aware it's limited to a 4GB data set. I'm not sure if that qualifies as a main-memory db, but it might be similar.

This was actually a pretty decent read. The author lists a number of common use-cases for Github pull requests and how they can be used in practice.

Looking at the "street view", it seems they had some sort of robot on treads taking shots with a camera. Seems reminiscent of some of the mars rovers.

I would LOVE to see a detailed breakdown on how an experienced sysadmin would set something like this up. I've cobbled together systems before, but I've found that doing so in a robust way is difficult.

If you already know ruby, have you considered using JRuby for this? I wouldn't besmirch anyone trying to pick up a new language, but I am curious to hear if there were any technical reasons for going with something else.

The project mentions that this was an intentional design decision. The graph's are written to a canvas element, which means a low memory footprint and the ability to save graphs as images. I believe they'd need to switch over to using SVG e

Having spent a good year at the 2012 batch at the 500 Startups office, I can safely say that the majority (>60%) of the guys I spoke with there were working off some sort of rails stack.

This is my first time hearing about Minix, and the new architecture seems interesting. Are there any other linux distributions that use something similar to Minix's micro-kernel approach, or is this a bit of an oddity?

Generally, effective petitions need to do two things: 1. Put pressure on a specific person or group of people to make a specific change. 2. Bring attention of an issue to a larger audience (i.e.: the press, a congressmen's constituents, etc

Great idea. I meet so many engineers who never took a speech class or simply don't know how to effectively present an idea to a group of more than one or two people.
