Minor correction, but you said 'efficient' not 'effective' tax collection in your original post, there's a big difference in the solution to either problem, but I still understand your point.

I haven't heard this before. How was their tax collection inefficient? Are you referring to tax evasion?

I've always wondered this as well. Are they contained in pipes or something? How do they deal with mountains and cliffs in the ocean? Do they go right over them or around them? Does anybody have information about the physical characteristic

Did they avoid paying taxes on the original principal? Seems like they paid taxes and then decided to move that capital to another country to put to use. I don't see the problem. The United States is no longer aiding in increasing the value

At the state level, but not the federal. There are federal unemployment benefits being granted. We didn't pay into that through past payroll deductions, so where is the money coming from if not current workers servicing the federal debt?

The termination of benefits is a disincentive to take a new job? I would think the continuation of benefits would be a bigger disincentive to going out and finding a job. Why not just eliminate unemployment benefits altogether? As a working

We view it as hard compared to what we have now. However, not having that comparison -- did people back then actually think life was hard? Or was it just normal?

CDSs are being sold, but generally aren't available to small retail investors. An investor who is not accredited would need to hedge some other way.

The part I don't understand is why Japanese citizens would accept such low returns on their investment for so many years, when so many investments outside of Japanese government debt would give them higher yields. Is it a cultural thing? Is

That's exactly my point though. Whether the product is good or not has little or no bearing on whether the stock is a good buy. It's all about the underlying financial fundamentals of the company.
