By "people", are you referring to Google? If so, I agree -- not having technical support available is a deal breaker for a system of that scale, especially if outages are as prevalent as the author claims.

Does this make anyone else feel extremely underpaid? I'm a software engineer at Fortune 200 company in a major metropolitan city, making about 30K less than these guys. It's not a technology company, so that must be the difference.

I wouldn't say he's scaremongering. There is historical precedent for what happens when liquidity in the marketplace dries up or how people behave when banks tighten their lending or go out of business.
