Humans are good at building houses and have many standard plans detailing how to do so. Yet we still hire architects to design custom homes. I’m ok with that. Efficiency doesn’t always need to be the end all goal.

You have a fair and understandable point. Here’s my perspective as someone who has been proximate to both industries. My parents ran a construction company. One day a guy showed up for his first day of work. By virtue of the project’s sched

Heck: for what it’s worth. If you or anyone else on HN is interested: I’m in college right now working part time, so I’m low on spare time, but I come up with seemingly profitable business ideas pretty regularly. If you want something to wo

Find a purpose that drives you. Volunteer your time, start a business, have kids, get another degree, build a house start to finish. From the purpurse, the desire to get thinks done and associated time management will follow. Jobs can serve

No offense intended here. I have a commercial drivers license and have put a bit of time in driving a truck as a summer job after high school. It sucks. Society basically treats trucks as outcast from the nicer places of our communities. Tr

Not only that. There’s usually development regulations for ‘sub divisions’ that specify minimum things like street access, utilities, etc.

Presumably this has been solved. It’s a mailbox. Once the software infrastructure for autonomous delivery vehicles is in place, I feel that people will gladly install $100 ‘autonomous-delivery-ready-mailboxes’. We gladly spend more than tha

Also design mechanical stuff for a living. I’ve spent multiple days over the course of the past six months creating drawings to demonstrate how a design will ‘feel’ once made. A 1:1 3d model that other stakeholders could walk into would be

But the laymen, like most techies, don’t like ads and thus will want to use add blockers. Thus they will be trained by their fellow tech folk to ignore those warnings which will decrease the effectiveness of other warnings.

Just tried this with my brother. Apparently I can listen to his iMac audio from my phone. This could mean and increase in the time to fix the bug.

People can get slightly better vacuum pressures in elaborate lab settings than are present on the moon. With trivial amounts of effort (and non-trivial sums of $), you can get within a couple orders of magnitude. Source: have done so myself

I would recommend investing in a set of pre-prepared samples as well, if you decide to get a decent microscope. They’re not super expensive and show a good glimps of what is possible.

In my working experience, mainly with small companies: if you consistently deliver good value, management and other employees shield you from most of the BS out there. If you don’t provide as much value you get to deal with the unpleasantri

Yeah. To take it a step further - I would argue that for a lot of things, the coding isn’t most difficult part of the innovation process.

I call the F150 pickup I drive small. It is compared to the F350’s and semi that I’ve also driven. In absolute terms it may be big. But for an electron app it’s probably not too bad.

As long as we’re getting into anecdotal evidence. I’ve driven an F150 as a personal vehicle and ran it pretty heavily(80 MPH over steep passes, firewood hauling, heavy trailers, off-road on farm, etc) and haven’t had any problems. I’ve also
