As a counter point, this post by Matthew Yglesias might be interesting. Basically makes the case that the standard of living today is significantly higher than back then, and we wouldn’t be okay living today like we did back then. https:&#

I'm always puzzled by stories like this: Why not just cut staffing to a minimal number of people -- go back to existing customers, and renegotiate existing contracts down (due to reduced support), and try to balance out the revenue wit

Apologies for the off topic comment, I turned off adblock recently to try to support websites more, but, this site really blew me away on how many ads one could load into a simple blog. Reinstalled adblock right away :(

I'm planning to add something like that if people actually find this useful! The nice thing with podcasts is that they are typically powered by RSS feeds, which let me download basically anything out there that isn't an exclusive.

Hello HN! I built an app that can transcribe & summarize podcasts. I'm a huge fan of podcasts & this was something I thought could be really useful. It's sometimes a little hard to figure out if something I am planning on

I'm a bit confused -- Are these instructions that are compiled and executed deterministically by some chatgpt runtime engine or is it just a prompt thats prepended to every input?

For what its worth, I often fly from one location to another without luggage (going home to visit parents for instance). its actually my far my most common mode of flight since I visit them 3-4 times a year. I appreciate the fact that I don

People have been quite good at committing genocide well before Facebook came around. I suspect even if Facebook didn't exist, the situation in Myanmar would not be materially improved.

Hi all, I built this to just dip my toes into this LLM space. I was using ChatGPT every day and it was really annoying to have to open up a new tab to do it. So, I hacked this together over a few weekends, and shared it among some friends w

Just to chime in here on a real usecase for VR that I would absolutely 100% pay a load of money for: I love traveling, and I'm fully WFH, so I can technically travel 365 days of the year, but the lack of a monitor basically makes it im

Uninformed on this, but if thats true does that mean that a $3 starbucks coffee paid for in bitcoin would incur a $1 bitcoin network fee? So likes 33% more expensive? Or is there some system that el salvador developed that acts as a clearin

I don't think thats true. Obvious example would be offline desktop apps like photoshop, any single player game, etc. Less obvious but just as relevant would be Snowflake, Clickup, etc letting me just deploy and host their software in o

The mental gymnastics happening in this thread to justify pirating books is pretty disappointing. Especially on HN, where I think a lot of our livelihoods depend on writing and charging for closed source code that can technically be infinit

We don’t like it when a service is ad funded and we don’t like it when we have to pay for it also? I think consumers have just come to expect investors to subsidize forever. It’s had a market distorting effect for too long

I would think it would turn Facebooks business to resemble Apple's, which I think we should all root for if we want to get away from the ad centric product they push on everyone today.
