Melbourne has a suburban heavy commuter rail network with an underground CBD loop. That's not the same thing as an underground metro like the NYC subway, Paris metro, Tehran metro, Japan, London Underground etc. All of these cities hav

Eh the trams are cute, and smooth, but painfully slow. Better passenger experience than buses, but the tracks and overhead cables are a blight on the streetscape and impact drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists alike. Overall, not worth it. Re

Pretty sure it's the other way around when we want to talk causality here. Wealth allows you to think long term because your short term needs are met and your children are safe.

Isn't that where you'd want flats? Nobody wants a SFH next to tracks. Certain types of people (I won't generalise) always seem to want to call apartment buildings "future slums." This almost never materialises. Is

Eisenhower was vehemently against freeways going through urban areas. Freeways are supposed to bypass cities. He was overruled by the bureaucracy.

What about the fact that some of the most prosperous times for average people come after epidemics and such which result in massive population declines?

Great info, thanks. The Netherlands is truly amazing with the types of infrastructure which have been built for safety and health. I am pro-safety, one of the reasons I left the US! Would love to explore the Netherlands.

Just curious, does this density across all of the country lead to a desire amongst Dutch people to find true wilderness every once and a while? For example travelling to remote national parks in the US or Australia/NZ? Or does it lead

Yeah I lived in Manhattan, never geographically closer to so many friends and rarely saw them. Everyone's too tired or too scheduled. In the suburbs we were often bored and open to just hanging out and not stressing about optimising ou

The hustler culture indicts us to a life of packing up and moving across the country just for a marginally better job offer or degree or cheaper mansions. You see this even on comment threads here discussing where to live in the US. People

They're even alone as babies. Americans have this weird obsession with putting babies to sleep in separate rooms as soon as possible, including newborns, as if this develops some rugged independence. All the research (and common sense)

Agree with this sentiment. This machine gets a lot of internet hype. I thought I would buy one but then I got a a Breville Bambino and grinder for half the cost of the Silvia and it takes up half the space and looks nicer. Couldn't be

Why doesn't Google disrupt itself -- the most concise, cleanest pages that focus on what the user is actually looking for (recipe, not a narrative) should be #1. It's even in Google's interest!

At least Japan has reasonable social housing and delivery services for them. The problem is their kids don't seem to visit or care. This exists in America it's just in trailer parks in declining interior towns.
