Disappointing how HN seems to have gone all-in on being a “mental floss” site.

Batteries aren’t replaceable anymore so people get a new phone just for a fresh battery. The battery on my Nexus 6p is unbearable now after 2.5 years, it hardly lasts two hours.

My general view after travelling to Denver is that one of America's biggest issues is underpopulation. There is so much land in these areas and actually lots of infrastructure relative to population. It all stood out to me how white th

Greater road safety. Aviation is a rare area where US government has done well regulating for safety. There’s no reason we can’t be as strict with cars. It’s a choice to accept risks.

We’ve chosen as a society to go all in on aviation safety due to the freakish and scary nature of aviation accidents. Meanwhile the US lags the developed world in road safety. Driving in the US is like a mad max situation. Many unnecessary

Way to subtly blame immigrants for shitty transport. I assure you it’s not immigrants running NY subway and the MTA. they’re not the corrupt politicians pilfering funds away from it either. It’s not immigrants who think they’re too good for

I don’t know, Australia’s got only four banks which dominate the market and yet they are pretty aggressive in innovative products. We just got instant bank transfers and that required cooperation amongst them to adopt standards and protocol

The US will get there again. Other countries are clamping down on lending to contain house prices while the US is opening up lending once again. And you can trust they'll do it recklessly again too.

Haha the same thing happened to me. But also not having 24/7 reality TV disguised as "cable news" blaring all around me all the time helps a lot. US is anomalous in this regard.

They use those plans to avoid discrimination lawsuits, that is really the only reason behind it. HR in the US is totally different too, it's basically "just protect the business from being sued by employees."

I'm the GP who brought up this topic. I actually am American and now working at a managerial level in Australia. When I ran into trouble with someone on my team performing at a poor level, I was a bit exasperated with these regulations

The real story is he has no employment rights because he's in America and he's "at will." They can dismiss him because they don't like his lunch selection that day and he has no rights. That's at will employmen

Well one was in NYC and the other in Sydney. NSW has a strict building code that requires acoustic testing (literally hitting the structure with a hammer and ensuring no sound passes through). I lived previously in a 100yr old brick walkup
