To be a bit blunt, that article with a heavily misleading title totally disappointed me. I was expecting to glean some insights there on how they applied certain kind of technologies into a vertical market -- nothing but a few marketing pit

I believe there is a difference between knowing how memory and pointers work and being proficient at pointer manipulation in C. If you enforce such kind of interviews in C, you will miss lots of great FP programmers. Maybe you don't care an

I believe your comment is spot on. The debates here is basically about what "professional level" careful training and hard work can bring this guy up to. The "nay-sayers" (including myself) agree on that he might become much more proficient

Same experience here, though I learned recursion in Pascal. Maybe it's just me, it just feels awkward when you do recursion in imperative languages. For the past two years, I've been playing/working with functional languages, firstly Erlang

I think there is a limit that motivation and hard work can only push that far. Beyond that, it's basically gift or talent rules the game. That may sound bitter when you realize it, but it's a fact of truth. That's especially the case in Mat

Just want to say that you can do iphone/android app dev in C# by using Monotouch/MonoDroid. Of course, you have to write a different UI layer for each platform.

I thought you were joking about Firefox 7. From version 4 to 7 in one year, are you kidding? It turns out you're right. For some reasons, I really dislike software companies jack up version numbers: how can you have FOUR MAJOR releases with

I think we need to compare apples to apples here: other competing hedge funds may have to pay a lot more to have those hackers code in C++, Java, or (gasp) VBA.

I don't know why you got so many down votes. Maybe HN folks got too sick of armchair architects/hackers. Honestly, what your said somehow resonated my inside hacker. I think lots of hackers share similar opinion --- as hardware/network are

I don't think this will be an issue if he manages to maintain the same API as Twitter.

If it were me in this situation, I would talk to the guy who has the cable and share his connection (even pay for his monthly fee to provide incentive). It's relatively easy to connect two houses by using directional wireless antenna.

Sounds to me the web search is not yet a solved problem. As the hardware (storage and memory) is getting cheaper and cheaper, and the emerging enabling technologies such as cloud computing, building your own search engine may not sound impo

I know I'm late to the party, :) I used Ruby 1.9.2. It's funny that it's the first time I used the combination generation method built in Ruby Array. The whole three questions took me about a bit more than 20 minutes, a bit longer than I th

I turned a NAS device -- Intel SS-4200E (has Intel Celeron CPU) into my dedicated home dev server. Installed Ubuntu 9.10, latest Ruby on Rails, Mono and F#. It rocks as it only consumes 40Watts when loaded with tasks. Cutting eletricity bil

I've been thinking of this for a while. Although there is fswebtools that shares the same spirit as GWT http://tomasp.net/blog/fswebtools-intro.aspx , it's not as polished. IMHO, F# for the backend to provide web service, jQuery for the fr
