Possibly something that became ThirdVoice. The concepts are very similar. Whatever it was, it had to be around in the 1996-1997 timeframe, and the sources I can find for ThirdVoice show it as starting in 1999. (Perhaps Beta?). Thanks.

Backrub.... I don't recall the name, but I remember using something exactly like (the originally intended) Backrub my first year in the dorms (1996 or early 1997). The program I was using was more of an overlay where you could draw on th

I agree completely with your caffeine recommendation. I used to be mostly a coffee drinker, but then I would crash sometime late afternoon (and crash hard on a three day weekend where I wouldn't drink any coffee). I've since switched to a

I could echo your sentiments (just for a different industry), but I won't to save space. There is always something to learn, though it may not be helpful right away. Product and domain knowledge not so much, unless you intend to compete

About time. All I can say is good luck, and that I hope to see lots of competition for these guys in the near future.

Good question. I would hazard a guess that they revised the test every year, but didn't want to put the more recent copies of it in the library as they'd be similar, and could poison the results. And therefore they held back old versions

Let me work on something really cool without undue interference and I don't care if you give me a t-shirt, coffee mug, water bottle or anything. Schwag is nice, but building something useful is better.

I've always liked prolog, and seeing prolog love on HN makes ?- happy(cydonian_monk) return true. My first exposure to the language, as I'm sure was the case for many of you, was in an Intro to AI course. Though I've never found the oppor

April Fools "Vaporware" or not, this makes me wonder if I could convert the CCD and related architecture from my second (and heavilly battered) digital camera into a drop-in film replacement. It would make for a great weekend project... if

When 'Status'es on FaceBook became automatic Wall Posts, and therefore persistent, I commented to a few friends that this one simple change altered the nature of Facebook from a social facilitator to a social inhibitor. Before, if you want

That was exactly my first thought. I was just ready to go home when the $41MM! news made the rounds and decided to check out the app before the commute. When it asked me to take a profile picture I had trouble finding an angle that didn't

No joke, though I'm not an old phone phreak (sorta...). It's just like remembering music - every number sings its own 10 note song. At least it was until my cellphone stopped playing back DTMFs for stored numbers. SIP and quiet dialing ha

Sometimes learning to enjoy (or endure) a new place is as simple as finding like-minded people to hang out with. Find some other ex-pats like yourself and meetup every now and then. Just being around people that think like you and have si

I don't directly remember any new numbers, but I know how the DTMF sequence for the number is supposed to sound when dialed. I could always work back from that to get a human-readable phone number if I needed it. Like Jebdm, the only numbe

Except that when you're working in a technology field, everything you do changes the world. It may not have a sweeping impact, and may only make a small and seemingly superficial change. But that small change makes it that much easier on

Fascinating post. Coming from an Engineering background I'd like to echo what another commenter said - Ideas must be treated harshly. If it's a bad idea then it needs to be vetted and corrected, especially if it's likely to kill someone.
