Most of the time, whenever somebody asks a question of the form "Something bad happened to me and it's not my fault. Advice?", the answer is usually "Talk to somebody who knows what they're doing (lawyer, accountant

Also, I contributed to Drupal for a while starting in high school. That itself doesn't bring in cash, but it established a reputation in that community, and now I work at NBC doing Drupal development. Open source contribution is a mean

I built simple websites for local businesses, and then moved into building an overly complicated CMS and hosting service for them. I put in like 18 hour days for almost a year (skipped a lot of classes in high school), and ended up with a p

Just build something - it really doesn't matter what. You have a good window of time where you have very little requirements in terms of paying rent, bills, etc., so take advantage of that and just write as much code as you possibly ca

It's not worth the risk. Go out and spend a couple hundred bucks on a Chromebook or something. If you need more computing muscle, use vim on an EC2 instance or something. I agree with other commenters saying you should dump your curren

I use slides.com. Easy/fast to put together a good looking slide deck, and I can provide a link for people to watch the slides on their own device (if I'm presenting somewhere that doesn't have a projector or something).

Drupal is open to beginners too. See https://www.drupal.org/core-office-hours for more info. Basically, you can join an IRC channel and let them know you're new to the project and want to help, and you'll have a t

Are you suggesting that off-the-shelf frameworks/CMSes are somehow inferior to writing everything from scratch? That seems pretty myopic. We gain a lot from using Drupal.

Laravel is built on Symfony components, and much of Laravel can be used outside of Laravel.

Big debate? Use what works for you. I prefer using Twig because it enforces not shoving random PHP into your templates, and there's no performance hit for using it (since it's compiled back to PHP).

We haven't been/won't be using it. Most of our traffic is anonymous, so we can optimize other parts of our stack. We'd rather not have to debug weird shit that comes up because of HHVM incompatibility.

Nobody uses FTP for deployment anymore, but the idea is still the same: just get the file to the server.

I'm a PHP developer that works for a major media company. We do large scale deployments, and I'd like to say that PHP is a terrible language that gets a bad rap. It's getting better, and it's already 1000000x better than

Fastmail.fm? It's as encrypted as webmail can be, and you can send gpg encrypted messages with a desktop client. I've been using it for just over a year, and I'm very happy with it.

Can I be snarky and ask why you didn't ask this question on StackOverflow? In all seriousness, some people will see it as a huge accomplishment. Some won't. If it were me, I'd put it on my resume. It seems like having a good

Do yourself a favor and stop using shared hosting services. A few years ago, you could justify it because of the cost. VPSes are so cheap these days, though, that it's silly to hamstring yourself with shared hosting. Digital Ocean is
