I don’t think those are exceptions. The signal to noise ratio is about the same (at least in my admittedly anecdotal experience of being a hiring manager off and on since 2013 or so). Nobody is truly unemployable. Filtering through 19 candi

You can be a terrible engineer with a degree. You can also be an excellent engineer without one. To me, that pretty clearly makes the case that a CS degree is not an indicator of future success in a given role. IMO, CS degrees don't pr

There are plenty of non-web jobs out there. I started in web and I'm actively trying to move away from it. That said: web is a great way to get your feet wet. There's more to it than just making a page look pretty. You can get exp

It seems like a huge problem for leadership to have decided that you're just going to go 6-12 months without a CMS. If your website is critical to the business, then it seems (perhaps) worthwhile to just pay for another year on your cu

Personally, I don't have time to spend on solving the same problem twice. I want a guarantee that something isn't going to break again. Yeah, it probably won't break again in the exact same way, but if you're writing you

4 hour tests are a nonstarter, but ponder this: how can you guarantee that bug will never happen again? You can be pretty sure. You can reason about the code that you’re now familiar with and infer (based on your current understanding) that

Types do a great job at assuring you’re getting generally the right kind of data in and out of different functions/methods, but they don’t assure that the program is actually doing the right thing. Strong typing just helps to assure th

You’re not going to convince people to change their views with words alone as a new team member. Just do what you need to do in order to be productive. If that means writing tests, do it. It doesn’t matter if there’s CI in place. Maybe only

IMO, "don't implement your own crypto" is more about the bits that actually _do_ the encryption. Use a battle tested library for that (e.g. libsodium). Wiring it up is a little different. You can misuse a library, but it'

A whole-screen refresh is slow, but typing does not require refreshing the entire screen. You can update small regions of the screen very quickly (which is what devices like e.g. the Remarkable do for writing).

If you want to turn your internet off, be my guest. A more comprehensive solution (imo) is required at the educational system level: we're kind of okay-ish at getting people to memorize things and take tests, but when actual critical t

I am also 30, don't have a degree, have a good job, and make good money. First, and perhaps most important: there is _zero_ shame in going back to school at any age. That said, don't derail your career for this. Career success (IM

Very few webpages link to FTP content. The right thing to do is to outsource that bit of functionality to an FTP client. Continuing to support a protocol that has largely been superseded and is very rarely used is self-evidently wrong.
