Maybe you were spared because you also use other browsers. They really don’t like Firefox though. Had a coworker get bitten by this recently. Mozilla should sue them. Or start suggesting matrix.org when the user tries to visit Discord.

That’s part of the problem though, isn’t it? Because they certainly want to serve some huge amount of traffic for free while they attempt to become the next abusive monopoly platform. They’re trying to have their cake and eat it too.

GCHQ is for it. Ross Anderson is arguing against them. He’s right BTW.

That’s pretty darn mild as far as current day politics go. Kudos to whoever fought the good fight on this one.

So what then is the argument about them needing more employees to serve more users? The frontend apps are all the same, whether they have 3 users or 3 billion.

Matrix servers still control group membership, and probably will for a while (ie, months). The vulnerabilities that allowed such users and devices to steal keys have been fixed.

What’s your alternative? Sneakernet? Anything that goes over a network could be stored.

Yes, unfortunately the platform providers are the only battery-efficient way of doing notifications on mobile phones.

Agreed with a lot of the points here, like starting small with a single piece of your API, then slowly expanding your tests once you’re comfortable that you know what you’re doing. Note that if you use the Locust framework to write your loa

You block this guy from the internet for a week —- for no apparent reason —- and then you come in here with a nitpick about how another related system works? Really?

Hey, that’s my project! Thanks for the link. We’re working on figuring out some sort of compatibility with MinesTRIX btw. In a healthy social ecosystem, there would be multiple interoperating clients AND servers.

Better option is probably to run a reverse proxy like nginx on a cheap VPS, with a Wireguard VPN back to the “origin” server in your house.

I wrote a little service to handle some of the Matrix client-server authentication API. The first version used Vapor before we had async/await. That was painful at times but doable. Earlier this year I got some time to rewrite it in m

There’s a very fast Matrix homeserver implementation written in Rust, called Conduit. https://conduit.rs/ I’m not one of the developers, but I am looking at using it for work.

And with async/await, server side Swift is really nice now. The old stuff with eventloops and SwiftNIO was painful. Now it feels almost like writing Python, only with a real type system and not slow.

I'm not the OP, but I'm updating my iOS app now to use async/await instead of callback hell for all of its networking code. It is much, much nicer. I also recently did some work with Vapor on the server side. Night and day

Fair point. But OTOH Twitter isn’t really innovating anymore either. Arguably the “move fast and break things” phase is over. Now we’re heading into the “monetize or commoditize” phase.

I think Tivo did a similar thing too, back in the day. (I wasn’t a Tivo customer but I had friends who were.) Sadly, these things never seem to end well.
