I'm really glad Perl was my first programming language back in 2000 and not Java or C#. The transition to Clojure was so much easier for me, not having done time in an OO prison. React succeeded in bucking the trend of OOP JS framework

There should be a firing squad for such abuse of Javascript. We were warned about what Typescript would turn Javasript into.

Because npm is the biggest repo in the history of computing and Deno makes it redundant. The people at Jetbrains knew about backwards compatibility when they created Kotlin. It's too late to just ditch npm.

Nubank is built exclusively in Clojure, proving large-scale projects can be developed with a Lisp. Same goes for Paul Graham and Viaweb.

I think Perl lost to Ruby because of Rails. Whilst Perl had a couple of web frameworks - Catalyst, Mojolicious and Dancer - they never gained anywhere near the traction of Rails. I think this was because Perl's early success in the 90s

I'll qualify that by some observations re the Ruby job situation in London which seems quite steady. Rails jobs in London in Indeed, for example have hovered around the 250 mark for many years now whilst Ruby jobs advertised are still

Agreed. It's VHS trumping Betamax all over again. Few things irk me more than Pythonistas crowing over their world dominance but if you look at the top 3 languages - Python, JS & Java - it's clear that language design counts f

As if Docker wasn't enough overhead for a poor laptop. What next - a local virtual data centre for development? Honestly, the infrastructure layers we have to fight with to get shit done these days.

Does Vue offer relief from React's continuous accretion of hooks? The big point of confusion for me with React, as the number of hooks just keeps on increasing, is how do I hold in my head all the ways these hooks can interact with eac

Despite recent improvements including raw string literals it beggars belief how Java still requires regex metacharacters to be escaped. Until that's fixed Java is not an option for me.
