he he .. this is why I was careful to add "some of the math" :) I really liked the short, to the point summary, with some historical pointers thrown in for good measure.

Indian telcos are not affected much by handset prices per se. Carrier-locked phones are getting rarer, as even providers who were CDMA-only are supporting unlocked GSM handsets. So, it's baffling why there is any link between the glut of ch

On a slightly unrelated note, I think the term 'responsive' is unnecessarily overloaded. I thought there were some performance problems with the normal HTML5 boilerplate ! Could 'screen adaptive' or 'multi-screen' be a better name ?

Have you looked at JEE6 ? They've really pared down a lot of the boilerplate you had to do, and the reference implementation Glassfish is a snappy customer. ORMs, i feel, are a misguided adventure, and Java on the desktop (eg IDEs) are a re

Hadoop is a leaky abstraction because it crashes ? Does not compute! I'm not very familiar with the others, but Lucene is really an example of great software. In a few lines, it makes you feel as if you can build a Google by yourself !

Exactly ! In fact, I know of people (myself included) who look at C# in envy ! I think Microsoft has managed the language really well, even taking painful decisions like backward-incompatible versions to properly support generics. Kudos to

This "Google can't do design" meme is really getting old, imho. At best, this is a story about one recruiter in a giant company not doing his job well in matching the requirements with the skill set of the candidate. It is easy to conclude

I am really uncomfortable with links not being underlined. It is a basic understanding that people new to the web pick up first. Taking away this cognitive aid forces link identification primarily by color (and size perhaps). Wonder if this

Hmm .. i had the opposite reaction. I usually look at the url to judge whether this result is worth following, and the all gray look makes this difficult.

In fact, I had got another search result test page, where it was even worse ! The main differences were that there were no dividing lines, and in addition to the washed out palette, the usually green 'url' section was also gray !! Unfortuna

Funnily enough, I gave up on Netbeans 6.9 because it was soooo slow to react to input ! It is a really well-thought-out, user friendly IDE (much better usability curve than Eclipse imho), but I couldn't stand the constant scanning it does f

Did anyone feel that the page design is a bit 'off'? I had to re-check to see if this was not some knock-off site.

Good point ! Balance is key in everything. There is no one right way, and this is exactly why those in management should have a mature outlook in handling the allocated power. A good example is how Kin was supposedly set back seriously du

Beautifully said, especially about Aunt Millie. Limiting the influence to your contacts should be the default setting. If some people are more adventurous, then they can jump in.

It would have been so cool if I could have redirected ads to a particular friend. E.g, I know he's looking for a camera, and I see this great deal when looking up some reviews for him. +1 -> Bob's a happy monkey !

Getting to Germany is the easiest when you are a student here. Do you want to think of getting a Master's here ? This i) helps you get here ii) gives you more access to startups who would be hesitant to take the burden of visa processing

I'm actually still new here, but one suggestion I've heard is to directly apply to companies you are interested in. But be prepared to deal with a borderline byzantine visa system, though ... about the only thing I can complain about.

I have heard this anecdote from many of my friends as well. So my advice would be : any devs frustrated with jobs in their country head over to Germany ! It's a beautiful place with a comfortable work culture ...
