this is a fascinating fact, and I guess I should have assumed everything was even worse than I thought. I guess it’s the flip side of civil forfeiture, departments funding themselves like businesses.

i mean this doesn't strike me as any worse than AU or eV or any other unit rescaled for convenience in some particular domain. if they try to claim patent or trademark that's obviously a problem, but otherwise is this so terrible?

it seems unreal to most Americans as well. it's not a practice that's widely known, as the article says. if the cards are given after a "donation", the donation is to the labor union representing the police officers, rat

there is a culty vibe. if i had to speculate why, it's that a lot of the more zealous Rust programmers simply have never had the skills or wherewithal to write in a systems programming language before. (I'd count myself in this ca

shocked that this doesn't mention taxes at all. if you donate a piece of art to a museum, in the US you can deduct its "fair market value" from your taxes. so if there's a way to drive "fair market value" up hi

i think the benefit is more for Rust users who find they need to make a GUI. There aren’t many good options right now so this will probably be welcome.

a big part of the early Rust community comes from Ruby, so Rust as an entry to systems programming is really common. Mozilla's IRC server has a #rust-beginners channel that is like, overwhelmingly helpful. Go and ask stupid questions.

rust at one point had garbage-collected references. And there's still Rc/Arc types for reference counting. I get what you're saying though. Another poster mentioned Swift and indeed Graydon Hoare, Rust's creator, is now

i remember people jokingly referring to stuff like word2vec (one layer, millions of dimensions) as "wide learning". this is definitely better branding than that.

working with dynamic neural net libraries that have autodiff (PyTorch, regular Torch, and I think also MXNet now) feels a lot like this. you just write normal functions, but after you execute them you can ask for gradients too.

it seems like it's made by analogy with "probabilistic programming", i.e. defining complex probability distributions by writing familiar-looking imperative code (with loops and whatnot). I think the idea is that thinking in t

Left and Right are really commonly used in this situation in ML-descended languages. It’s not the worst thing. I don’t mind car and cdr though. I kind of wish they were in Clojure tbh. It feels nice to pay tribute to a half-century of compu

it seems like the main problem this solves is around the ergonomics of getting Rust to compile your code down to SIMD instructions. having run into this while working on Rust code a while ago, I really appreciate this library! I would expec
