I think the issue here is more her posting the picture and identifying the people, no? I had a strong urge to tweet "There's a guy with a Jagermeister hat and Green Day shirt reading a Berenstain Bears book in the doctor's waiting room" a c

I wonder what would have happened if that was the talk to be cancelled? That's a triggery topic regardless of gender.

Does anyone know if it's normal to keep the title/content of talks TBD until that soon before the talk? That stood out as odd to me.

Yeah, I do agree, and I hope my first post tried to make that clear - I just have seen a trend with some dramatic bloggers in the past, so it often clouds my view when reading an unrelated/less biased post. It is reasonable for her to be up

I don't know all the background, and I don't want to end up victim blaming, but often I've found these things to be red flags: I do remember there was some drama involving her and BoingBoing a few years back. I do not remember all the detai

I'm a female developer, and I fought this my whole career. It is real. I even bought several books on it, which are mostly outdated. It used to happen more in fields like law/medicine. I don't think I ever experienced outright sexism, but

I was homeschooled (just through highschool), yet maybe not a "traditional" homeschooling - I basically chose my own classes and went to community college, etc. I would think that any studies done on homeschooling from the more religious as

Great reply. I'm always so happy that the comments on HN seem to be so reasonable. What stood out to me is your comment about moving...I myself have picked up a lot of unhealthy behaviors and habits by being trapped in a city where people a

Something I find interesting that I don't see immediately mentioned in the comments is what a "shut-in" or "hermit" really means when you have the internet. The author has a prolific Twitter account, and in writing this is interacting with

What?? What about Christian Grey? This has totally thrown off the book's realism for me.

This article is frustrating, it doesn't really explain the implications. In what sense is this "illegal"? Could I be jailed or fined for doing this? I doubt it's going to be enforceable, unless somehow the carriers care enough to keep a dat

I think of it this way: It's just as racist as how straight/gay people are sexist :) Physical attraction to someone is a whole different thing.

I'd also like a comparison, although I guess pinboard was describing themselves as "bookmarking for introverts" which more closely fits how I'd want to use a service. I have problems using too many new webapps because of all of the social f

I don't know about this, depending on the excuse (I made a comment on travel reliability), the time frame, and the type of event, it isn't on the top of my list. Perhaps I'm so forgiving because my actual problem is that people are so incre

Just kind of a walk-through. I think part of it is that I can't fully force myself to read it as code when it's written poetically like that, so even syntax conventions I fully get are causing my eyes to glaze over.

That's very true. I tend to hate people's BS excuses for most things (I'm glad "the holidays" is now over, since that was a perfect excuse for pretty much anything), but I rely on public transit (bus system, not subway) to get around. Often

Blah, this is not a good way to get back into Ruby. I get that most of it is just fluff, but can anyone break it down a little? Really stretching the syntax.

I'm nowhere near the top of my profession, so I'm baffled by it. I'm actually glad to read about it, since my non-dev friends don't understand it and get angry at me for bitching about people trying to offer me work! I am however, a minorit

Wasn't there a guy in Australia who got his house raided for having Tor exit servers? How long is it going to take before people use this for something like child pornography and you go to jail?
