I like BeautifulSoup, but these days I'd suggest using lxml ( http://codespeak.net/lxml/ ) instead. Unfortunately, BeautifulSoup is on the slow side, and development seems to have shifted into maintenance mode.

Sure, but Diaspora, by virtue of the interest on Kickstarter has a priori traction. I'd rather see a bunch of people interested in this problem work together, and form Voltron as it were, than a bunch of different groups try and fail.

Nope, but I imagine they read Hacker News, and would like to see them succeed. I think Y Combinator could potentially help with that.

I'd be less interested in arguments than seeing hard data that analyzes the correlation between funding and successful outcomes. Money buys you time and resources. Yes, there are famous examples of startups that have burned through scads

I agree that I would like to see some code, but don't underestimate the importance of funding when running a startup. Even if Diaspora is not, strictly speaking, a startup, it's worth talking to press while the story is hot because it like

There's lots of great coffee, food and nightlife in the Mission, but, as I said that's potentially a distraction from your startup. Check out Ritual Roasters and Four Barrel Coffee if you like coffee. For food, you have to try the crepes at

Couch surf for a while, if you can, so you can decide where you want to live. I'm a big fan of the Mission in San Francisco, but that may prove to be a distraction for working on a startup.

Come play with some of the technology I've been working on for my Burning Man project this year. We'll have some giant touch screens to play with, as well as many of the artists and engineers who are working on the project.

This is what doesn't add up. If you want to make money, why would you post anything and risk killing the golden goose? If you want to share your wisdom or experience, why do so in a vague, watered down fashion? Why not just wait, and pub

If it's so obvious and trivial to duplicate, why don't you have scads of competitors already? You can't be operating in a vacuum.

Alternatively, perhaps exit applied Occam's Razor and concluded that maxklein is either a fiction or a fraud, and calling him out in public seems like an apt way to expose the lie?

We have videos, photos, and cad of the ongoing development process. Per pg's suggestion we're going to link to the project web site, just waiting on an update to the blog that references the Kickstarter.

I'm really glad the article includes a warning against trying not to overuse design patterns. I sometimes wonder if teaching design patterns causes people to rely on pattern matching as a crutch, and hampers the development of creative thi

Regulating free services would be insane. The cost to start a startup have been dropping, and this is a good thing since it facilitates more innovation with less risk. If free services had to follow cryptic regulations it would significan

The twitpocalypse came and went, and developers updated there apps to use 64-bit ids for tweets. It was a necessary growing pain that the API had to go through. This is no different.
