I'm a big fan of Boldrin/Levine but suspect they're wrong about this. The reason medical investigation is so expensive is because there's so much red tape around it in the form of approvals, and the convoluted systems health coverage in the

Two things. R&D is not a generic, fungible thing. R&D that occurs in a patent environment will have a different focus than R&D that occurs without. I'd expect funding spent on lawyers writing defencive patent proposals would be

The OP and your post have the word 'stealing' in. It's an incorrect use of the word. It's not hard to find respectactable nimby cases. What if someone wanted to pub a pub at the end of your street? You are not a drinker, and you object to t

Particularly for those who are new to remote communication, it can be as trivial as not groking that this kind of interaction is just as real as face to face conversations. Just because you don't see the reactions doesn't mean that they're

I think the base of the problem you're describing is the small population base and (less so) tyranny of distance. If you're in the US and come up with a product there are lots of options for accessing new markets fast. If you're in Japan th

I've installed ubuntu on the x1 carbon this weekend after hacker news recommendations about thinkpads for linux. UK model with US-English keyboard, i5 processor. Seems to be flawless with ubuntu. All drivers worked out of the box. Wireless,

(Follow-up post after re-read.) Actually, maybe these things have features that I wouldn't know of being only a curses person. I'd be interested to know more if you wrote up a blog post. Email cratuki at the google mail server.

Putty is fine though. Something that would be useful but which I don't think exists at the moment is a multiplexor. Like GNU/screen, but properly sandboxed. When the user logs in they get a menu program running on "tab 0". This program woul

Thanks. I have had a similar experience: when I was a teenager I helped with stock-take at a warehouse - once a year, for several years. I saw ladies doing data entry to terminals that were hooked up to an application running from another c

Web isn't a replacement. It doesn't and won't ever have consistent keyboard handling across platforms and browser upgrades. As a result, it has evolved to being mouse-centric, and is inadequate for high-volume users. There are many web syst

If they're smart they'll try to create a profit model oriented around online services, and switch their revenue stream to be funded through this. Currently they're funded through the "TV charge" which is a nasty footnote to life in the UK.

Exam room essays are a great way to measure knowledge, and difficult to cheat on. You have to know the domain thoroughly in order to be ready to write an essay response. Being able to write this demonstrates integrated understanding of the

There were books published before copyright existed, and would be if copyright was removed. With only a handful of exceptions, successful writing isn't enough to make a good living under the current regime, where writers make money by havin

I think it's a mistake to overload ctrl+b. That's taken by standard vi functionality. If I'd written this, I'd have been tempted to use ` as a leader. So `n would open a new window. `b would open that buffers view currently bound to ctrl+b.

I think 443 will be a better example because (I think) it's harder for a middle party to profile https and see that it is indeed https and not something else.

I wouldn't buy a macbook for linux regardless of display. Mainstream linux window managers expect two mouse buttons. If you want an ultrabook, there's a great new Thinkpad just released made out of carbon fibre. Lenovo hardware tends to wor

Broad-brush talk is a step backwards. Political talk and thinking is poisoned by the ideas of "left" and "right" even though those phrases haven't had a connection to reality since the French First Republic. It'll probably be fine. Politics

Another concept users need to understand is the index. That causes confusion if you don't understand the idea that there's a cache in between what's checked in and what's on your disk.

Interesting thread. When I learnt music theory (as an adult) the way I was taught is that there is a correct way to go about writing a tune to pass the exam, and that if you evaluate the tune through these criteria it will also sound good.

It's interesting that the curve on the left passes through zero rather than one. I've always been inclined to think 1 x = x, and think of one as fundamental. But the pattern shows that rather than 1 x being fundamental, rather there is the
