Great choices... I've seen Jesu and Isis live in the past month or so; they both were great.

You're talking about automatic parallelization. There's been quite a bit of research done in this area, but the results aren't that great. Some languages (particularly functional ones) are better suited to automatic parallelization than o

I dunno... PG's articles don't make the top 10 on Reddit like they used to.

No, or at least, not yet. It is written using Paul Graham's language Arc, which has not been released yet. Arc has been in development for quite some time and is occasionally the subject of vaporware jokes, but presumably it will become O

More signs that "Web 2.0" is the new "Dot Com." This particular company is way crazier than Pets.com and the like. Does anyone seriously think that parents of newborns -- some of the busiest people around -- will really have the time to p

Interesting. All my friends at MIT absolutely hated Scheme after taking that class; I don't know what the general sentiment there is.

Just nitpicking here, but Citigroup turned a loss this past quarter due to mortgage-backed security writedowns. I think Google actually turned a respectable profit.

The Windows 95 sound (which I rather like) was done by Brian Eno, a noted ambient composer. From an interview Eno gave (found on his Wikipedia page): "The idea came up at the time when I was completely bereft of ideas. I'd been working on

Eh, I don't really expect the NYT to edit each and every blog posting on their site. Published articles from the print edition, sure -- but I'm willing to cut them some slack on blogs.

Some of those numbers seem extremely inflated. Sure, I can believe that 95% of "all users" watched Internet video in the past three months. But 32% of all users listen to music on their cell phones?! Nearly everyone I know has a cell pho

I actually think Ning is a clever idea, but I don't see it as anything more than the social networking equivalent of Eve (commercial message board software) or Topica (commercial listserve software). If well-trafficked websites are willing

That book was OK, but the later parts (where he talks about CAPM and so forth) are uninformative to anyone who knows about modern mathematical finance. If you're looking for pop-math/finance books that could change how you look at the world

This article seemed a little strange to me: it seems almost obvious that getting an MBA is a bad idea for many areas of finance. I interned on a trading desk at a major investment bank last summer and will be starting a full time job there

No version for MacOS 10.3 :-/ I've resisted upgrading for so long, since 10.4 never had any particular appeal to me, but it's getting harder and harder to find apps built for 10.3.

Yet another example of how derivatives are transforming financial markets for the better by transferring risk to those best able to handle it. It's also a great example of how mathematical and computer-driven models are helping us understa

The woman they're talking about said "everything was suddenly more vivid and memorable." Presumably the event was so important that she remembered trivial details around her that she normally would have forgotten. It happens to everyone.

Well, how is your model different from my.mp3.com? As you might recall, they did a website where you could upload your own music and play it from any Internet computer, but were sued and eventually settled for $200m. http://en.wikipedia.o
