You could have written a program in any language. It just needed to accept certain command line options and send results to stdout in the proper format. They only provided "starter kits" for a few languages, but if you were willing to wri

Well, the Altair was the first of its kind. Despite its flaws, it was a revolutionary product that sparked an entire market. This tablet, on the other hand, comes after the iPad and other less shoddy Android competitors. If there's innov

I think Myspace actually HAS become the standard for such bands, at least for the music that I listen to (metal/punk/hardcore/indie/experimental). You can look up pretty much any band by Googling "band name myspace". You'll get the tour s

This is comes up in Charles Stross's novel "Accelerando." He imagines a relatively near future where children grow up speaking partially synthetic languages. It's one of my favorite novels; you can read it online, too: http://www.antipop

I went to school at Cornell, which isn't too far from the town in the article. There are dozens of other towns like this in central New York, and the larger cities like Rochester, Syracuse, Binghamton, and Elmira aren't doing that well eit

Well, Excel does have VBA. Whether that's a "normal" programming language depends on your definition of "normal." You can do some very useful stuff in it, but you'll feel like you're fighting the language every step of the way.

Read this one a few months ago. Thought it was OK, but I hear the sequels, in particular "Chasm City," are a little better. I'll probably check it out in the next month or two.

Awesome. I'm a huge fan of Stross. "Missile Gap" was my favorite story in that collection. "Accelerando" is his best novel by far, IMO. Check it out if you haven't already.

This is probably a stupid question, but if heat dissipation is a big problem, why can't we just build better cooling systems: bigger heatsinks, refrigeration, etc.? I'm not an electrical engineer, so I'm sure there's something I'm missing.

If someone told me to hack together a mini-Lisp? Sure, I'd use something different. But at the time I'm happy I used what I did. I learned just as much about C as I did about Lisp.

I agree. Not saying they're a monopoly. The merger-blocking issue is the only reason I can think of for a joint venture being illegal. The difference is that explicit collusion is ALWAYS illegal. Otherwise innocuous activities that may h

I wrote a similar piece of code way back in high school, based on Paul Graham's "The Roots of Lisp" essay. I didn't know any better, so I used C/C++. Don't think I've ever learned more in a single programming project.

If the FTC determines that the joint venture would form a monopoly, they could in fact block it on antitrust grounds. The FTC blocks mergers all the time. Explicit cooperation in restraint of trade is always illegal, though.
