Windows is mainstream for developers. There are millions of them. Probably more than the open source community. They just suffer more! (Note: I do both 50/50 and certainly don't prefer writing code on windows)

I don't think it makes it any easier. To be honest (as someone who deploys a lot of Windows machines) PowerShell only makes it fractionally easier. There are always packages and bits of software that just don't have a programming

This. Cygwin is not UNIX. It looks like it and runs UNIX tools but it has some gotchas that can shoot you in the toes and face if you move your stuff to another box.

Creating a branch is instant (well < 5 seconds). Switching branches depends on how much change there is between the previous branch and the one you are switching to. It basically sends all the files that have changed. On our solution whi

This article is idiotic and is clearly written by someone who doesn't understand Subversion. You work on feature branches, then merge them into trunk. Only at the point of that merge are you sharing changes with everyone. But at any ti

It becomes less trivial when you have 100 computers to throw it on at once before it works. If you read my comments carefully, you will see this is a merge time issue. Many different people do merges. Some reintegration merges will be perfo

Good for you. Didn't work for me at university. We had one lecturer who was great and would adjust his material on his OHP transparencies if questions were asked and explain in detail. Unfortunately questioning others or asking for cla

And it's only going to be £3000 a seat!!! Excuse the sarcasm but Mathematica is unjustifiably expensive to be general purpose and ubiquitous and I'm sure any derivative or superior tool will be as well.

Actually no it doesn't work like that. It's really a pain in the arse for windows users like myself who are part of more than a one man team. What happens is, you get three options: 1. Deploy Ruby, Sass and associated dependencies

I still refuse to use Sass or LESS. 1. Tooling integration is a PITA, especially with Visual Studio. 2. Nothing but trouble merging the stored output from the tooling if you are in a branchy development. Basically, merge the CSS, then run s

Similar with the galaxy ace. It sucked so badly that you couldn't type on it at all and that had a capacitive screen. My wife had some major surgery and was in recovery trying to text me and I though they'd broken her - turned out

I tried CM on a Galaxy Ace. No amount of turd polish could make that a good handset. I think the installer for it though is a great idea.

Well potassium nitrate is a pretty strong oxidiser. Mill it with a pestle+mortar and mix it with icing sugar 1:1 by mass. Put 30-40g on some alu foil. Setting fire to that will produce crap loads of smoke very quickly. I filled my entire ga

I see a lot of reactionism on this thread regarding "kids and chemistry sets". I agree but disagree. With the right supervision, it's awesome. The latter is key. I had multiple chemistry sets and am not dead and have all my f

Two reasons: 1. Battery leakage. You can't charge a battery and leave it somewhere disconnected and expect to come back to a full charge. Small amounts of power leak all the time. Look for "self discharge". There are lines of
