Once you start coding, start sitting in on some CS classes at your college to get some fundamentals down. Data Structures (bonus points if it's in a functional language), Algorithms, Systems, and Architecture are all a must.

Cool site. I am working on the same thing (but for school/fun). You should look into Support Vector Machines as they are much better at text classification then kNN.

So, just curious, why haven't you guys bought dropbox.com from whoever owns it now? Seems like a smart move because if I tell people to "try dropbox", they'll go to dropbox.com first.

It does target to the user based on your searches and other things (assuming you're cookied). It just doesn't ask for explicit input from the user which is counter to the "google way" of abstracting that kind of control away from the user.

Oh god I spent countless hours in that game. There was also something called "Clik N Play" that let you make your own video games.

It's also one of the better ways to reliably compare people against each other for the type of intelligence and problem solving skills that programming requires.

Take an algorithms course at the best university you have access to. Do all the homework. As for books, I really like Algorithm Design [Tardos, Kleinberg]. It has a ton of really well designed problems to work on.

I just went through a three week gauntlet of interviews (~10 companies who each do at least 3 1-hour interviews). This slide set is pretty accurate in terms of what to expect but I'd weight the API's/language/philosophy sections down a bit.

I'm not so sure he supported his family on donations for very long. BitTorrent turned into a pretty well funded venture (of which he is chief scientist) a while ago.

Well if you're getting paid a salary, it's not the case that it's riskier for you. You get to enjoy some of the benefits of a startup (culture, equity, etc) without having to go through the period where you're living on credit card debt and
