A lot of these are just poor UI/UX considerations that aren't necessarily HTML5 related. It's funny how this article is featured on a site that has a fixed container at the bottom taking up almost a quarter of my viewport.

Back when I switched from Firefox to Chrome, FF was a very heavy browser that took up a lot of memory. Chrome was very light-weight and nimble. Clearly, that has changed since then but it was a big competitive advantage. One process per tab

Definitely recommend Stefanov's JavaScript Patterns. I'd suggest reading both concurrently since JavaScript Patterns covers best practices with JS as a whole while Essential JS is focused almost exclusively on design patterns.
