I miss sites like this being a greater proportion of the internet. When everything else was just fields... and javascript was to be used as little as possible.

After 15 years I still struggle to estimate how many times the client will change the requirements within an ~8 week project, let alone how long it will actually take.

It would explain the bizarre hiring practices - plausibly relevant, but often in areas most devs just don't use day to day - that you could coach fellow agents to pass! (I've never actually bothered interviewing with any of the ab

Didn't expect this comment to come back from being voted down so much! Guess it splits opinion.

I don't even want to use it for commercial projects. It needs a certain scale before the overheads are worth it.

I worked somewhere with free coke and kit kats. Turns out, I've got willpower when in the supermarket, but not when there's a fridge in the office. I could just about limit myself to 1 of each a day, but even that was too much.

I don't find Eclipse that bad - but the first thing I do is install the most popular dark theme from the marketplace. The default look isn't good.

Feeling like a bit of a noob, but how did you install it? I only found a targz download link, didn't understand the contents of it - it looks like the inside of a macOS application package. The installation instructions refer to it bei

Yeah... if anyone remembers Google Wave, which was open sourced and pushed out to Apache when Google decided to close it down. Eventually that didn't even have enough momentum to live on under Apache. Which might not meet some definiti

Likewise. And I've reaped the rewards from it, but there's still plenty to be miserable about. What was that Nietzsche quote? To live is to suffer, to survive is to find some meaning in the suffering. I'm not sure I've

Have you ever worked with brilliant assholes? It sucks the life out of you - and it really sucks when they get idolized and rewarded heavily. I've worked with a few people I'd consider brilliant. But none whose accomplishments r

I think someone said it costs over €2000 in Sweden. You could buy a large estate car, albeit second hand, today for that.

In the UK, once you reach £100k they tax you at the 40% rate plus begin removing the tax-free allowance. Giving you an effective tax rate of 60% up to about £121k. That's on top of the 20% VAT and 20% corporation tax paid out by the co

Being more stressed in your 30s than your early 20s is probably normal too. You've got less time on the planet, I've got a wife and three kids to support now, career options are vastly more limited, incurred massive debt to buy a

I think that's the bottom line. I've done virtually zero unit testing on a project before when there was barely time to write the core code. There wasn't much business logic, lots of I/O and no user inputs or browsers to

I no longer do. My last MacBook was a 2013. It has 16GB RAM and a 1TB SSD and I still use it. I'm somewhat desensitised to the price creep because I buy on the business but it just doesn't seem like I'm in the target market a

You already have to do that - if you're in France and it's within a couple of hours of when the sun is highest in the sky the shops are probably shut. On a Sunday they probably don't even open at all.

Costa were in the news for selling a coffee with more calories in it than a double cheeseburger. But then McDonalds, I think, already sell more coffee than anyone else in the UK, so I guess they're converging from both directions.

I think it's a huge mistake for children to talk to computers. I'm not so sure I'd go that far, or that it's any more dangerous than a web browser. My kids are quite young and I'm happy for them to talk to Alexa,
